Mine crapped out the other day and being wired SUCKS! So, whos using them, whats ya gut, etc. ANY and ALL information is greatly appreciated.
Im running a home business on DSL currently, but might upgrade to something faster in the future so I want to be prepared. I dont want to break the bank, so Id like to spend under $130 if possible. Ill be using 3 PC's and a PS3 on it if it matters. I dont know anything about new routers, so like I said, I really appreciate ANY and ALL information. Thanks in advance. edited to add: Also using a wireless printer. My current POS that died used to crap out almost every time I used the phone (just a digital phone on a lanline), and it ran SUPER SLOW when using the microwave for long periods to defrost big steaks, etc. Last edited by bigvig; 05-01-2011 at 04:37 PM.. |

I run a ASUS RT-N16 Newegg.com - ASUS RT-N16 802.11b/g/n Gigabit Wireless Router up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server
I have a lap top running constantly, a wireless lap top most of the time, a wireless printer, vonage phone, xbox live and sometimes my wireless Sirius hooked up. Every now and again my Wii is running also. It can handle a huge packet load and if for some reason you overload them, it recovers pretty quick. I've also hit download speeds of 2.5 MB/sec while talking on the phone that runs through it. You can set it to prioritize certain applications like gaming, vonage or it even has a setting for p2p if I remember correctly. It also can transfer files on at GB speed if you have the proper ethernet cable. I've had it for 8 months so far and have loved it. I had a linksys and it crapped out every time I used the phone. Good one to check IMO and has decent reviews. It's about in the price range you are looking for too. I can pick up my signal about 200-300 feet from the router. One thing that needs to be done though is upgrading the firmware once you get it. It's free to do but it comes with a bare bones firm ware that is ok. Keep an eye on newegg.com. They run sales all the time on stuff. I've gotten all my computer needs like hard drives and routers from there. With DSL you would not really get the most out of it I don't think. I run a 18 MB download 2 MB upload through it. DSL varies depending on how close you are to the source I think. You can get good speeds but I'm pretty sure it depends on proximity to the source. I run my wireless off a Linksys Router from Wal-Mart and it works everything I have just fine.
Could be that I am running it off a really good cable internet connection though. |
