exactly. i look at how they play on the field, not 40 times and vertical. remember a coule years ago when the whole second day of the draft was talking about jarron gilbert jumping out of a pool? oh, he must be good, right? kiper and mcshay said he was a beast and the bears got a steal in the third round. where is he now? he played like 3 qtrs of football. didnt do shit, couldnt adjust and missed assignments. theres way more to football than physical speed and shit.

We don't. They don't. No one does.
That's half the fun. But there has to be some recognizable, identifiable and accepted form of evaluation or else might as well just pick names out of a hat. All the evaluations had Gabbert rated higher then Locker. That's all.

And according to the game film Gabbert was rated higher then Locker in all categories.
It's impossible to determine who will be a bust. From all indications Ryan Leaf would have been the next Peyton Manning coming out of college.

exactly my point. fuck kiper and mcshay. use your own eyes on them and look at on field performance. richard dent wasnt even rated by kiper cause he wasnt even supposed to be drafted. he went in the 9th rd. he is now a hall of famer. stats like that prove scouting is flawed and i dont pay attention to "best availables" or "big board"

It doesn't prove that scouting is flawed. Scouting just ranks people based on college performance, combine results, pre-draft work-outs, etc..
It just proves that college performance does not equal pro perfornance. But like I said, you have to have some measurable form of evaluation or it's just a total crapshoot and you might as well pick names out of a hat. Actually, I saw a chart. I think it was Peter King that posted it this week. The chart shows the # of pro bowls (which of course isn't a true measurement of skill/ability either) that players made based on round of the draft they were selected. First rounders made the most (which would indicate that more often then not, the scouting is right) and the last rounds were second (which would indicate that those later round guys have more to prove and try harder). Look at Matt Cassel. Not a single start in college. He's now one of 32 starting QBs.

I love the draft. However, it feels lackluster this year.
My 1st Round summary: -Cam Newton is a joke for a #1 pick and the Panthers will regret having Cam the Cat around. -Julio Jones is pure sick, however the Falcons gave up way too much for him. Mike Ditka style. -Wow! Detroit did is moving in the right direction with Fairley on board along side Suh. -Ponder as a Viking? He better produce as he will have the opportunity. That is the main thing. It just seems like a horrible pick for now, IMO. -The Bears owe nothing to the Ravens for the botched trade. The Ravens wanted to trade down and got their man at a later spot saving a few million. -The Saint's did the best by improving themselves in both the defense and offense so far. Two picks in the 1st round always help. Move along now crybaby Reggie Bush. -The self-called "Draft Guru" in Kiper is a moron as usual. -Can't wait for day 2 this evening. BOOMER SOONER!!!

well where was he drafted though? thats how you would judge him being accurately scouted. it goes both ways. there are busts and achievers that prove you cant always go by combines. it is the best way to scout a player though, dont get me wrong. but when people and media get so shocked by a player getting picked over a higher scouted player, i just get pissed. saying someone is better for a certain team just cause of speed numbers or lifts is nonsense. you have to factor in personal he is surrounded with and schemes. some players can work better in different situations. there is no way to know how the team evaluated him too. who was the reciever taken above percy harvin that had everyone in uproar a couple years ago?

I thought the Bears/Ravens trade-non trade botch was funny. Both sides thought the other was turning in the trade and neither of them did.So the Ravens didnt get there pick in in time.
