I'm doing my senior research paper in Illinois State University, and the seminar is on the Age of Reagan. But the research topic I decided to do for my paper was the rise of Uber Masculinity in the 1980s.
Of course most of the tankers here grew up in the 1980s, so I would like to get some help from you guys. Would anyone have any knowledge on where I can get books and materials on GI Joe, He-Man, Thundercats, Transformers, WWF, and more 80s uber masculinity? Comics and the Shows don't count as they're already my primary sources. What I'm looking for is written work about it. Like a biography of sorts. My thesis of my paper is that uber-masculinity rose in the 1980s as a response to the counter culture that took place in the 1970s. Thanks for helping!

There's nothing masculine about He-Man, Transformers, or the Thundercats. lol Also, I don't think the 80's were a time of "uber-masculinity". Many popular "heroes" in different media got by on their brains as much as their brawn. Batman, Marty McFly, Indiana Jones, Luke Skywalker, ect. got by on being resourceful, and intelligent not on sheer strength like in generations past.
While the WWF certainly lends itself to "uber-masculinity" it's not like wrestling was anything new. It had been extremely popular before. It just hadn't been promoted in that way before. Even GI Joe I wouldn't consider to be "uber masculine" as it was one of the few properties that was aimed at young boys that featured multiple women in the cast who were all very strong individuals. A character like Marty McFly wouldn't have been popular in the 40's, 50's, or 60's. Possibly the 70's, but I doubt it.

well the paper won't be just based on those alone. There are also the movies as stallone and arnold were at their best in the 80s with their films. but if you've noticed, there were more gender based shows in the 80s compared to the 60s and 70s with their gender friendly , as hannah barrah, WB, and Disney rocked their Saturday cartoons with yogi bear, looney toons, scooby doo, and a bunch more.
but the 80s decided to separate the genders with gi joe, he-man, strawberry shortcake, my little pony, and jem. so what I'm trying to aim for is see how these franchises rose up. Quote:
