Depending on how your excersising, push-ups and planks can do more for strengthing the core than crunches, check into it. P90 is designed to keep your body from plateauing and becoming more efficient at one activity so that the benefits are not diminished. You can apply that philosophy to any activity you do to keep your body confused.

One of my biggest critiques of workout programs (videos and such) is that they don't appear to be anything new. SHocking your muscles (doing different exercises so muscles don't get lazy) has been around since bodybuilding. Arnie talks about this stuff in his pumping up video from the late 70's early 80s
My second criticism is that if you need a video to get you motivated to workout then chances are you will not stick to the program.

I've been doing Tony Horton workouts (p90x, p90x +, 1 on 1) for 2 years now and swear by them. I had been running and lifting on a regular basis for 10 years and needed a change. P90x fit my lifestyle perfectly. If you're not used to exerting yourself try something else or pick up the P90x DVDs used so that you don't feel as if you wasted money if you give up.
The equipment is a modest investment. I opted for the Iron Gym pull up bar (available at Ross now), the cheapest push up stands I could find, some SPRI resistance bands, a yoga block, a mat, and 20 lb hex weights. Lighter weights are sufficient at first as p90x strength training is quite different from lifting at the gym. This initial equipment investment was fine for the first 3 months. I did eventually purchase some additional hex weights and finally upgraded to the Bowflex Selectech system when I stopped seeing gains. The equipment and DVDs were less expensive than my gym membership was in Chicago. Diet is extremely critical and it is difficult to follow the diet plan as it is boring. I typically ignore the p90x diet and make sensible food choices. You will most definitely stop doing the yoga and "kenpo cardio" workouts. They're boring and make you fell like a jackass. I supplement those days with cycling. If you have any other questions let me know! Good luck!

Try CrossFit. The site is free and has a new workout each day. Scale back as needed to keep up the intensity. All exercises are functional and varied. If you kick around on the site you'll find info on the "block diet". It's not a traditional diet rather a way to ensure you get the right macronutrients. I dropped about 40 pounds with it a few years ago and have stuck with it since. It's worth a few minutes of your time in my humble opinion.

I personally don't subscribe to video workouts or anything like that.
If it's working for you...fine I'm happy for you and keep doing it! Being passionate about health and fitness with still a crapload of work to do, I see more people buying these videos and fad diets because they're afraid of the gym. They're insecure or they pick a gym that has BS trainers that wont help them. So they go the way of the video and it lasts about a week before they stop. It's just like collecting toys. If you want to really know what's up you come to a place like this and surround yourself with people that are knowledgeable and helpfull. Same thing with a good gym. Personally I go to a Gold's Gym 5 times a week..and this week 6 and in the next few months it'll be Gym M-F and training for a few hrs on Sat morning with Ninja Force lol...no seriously I do some martial arts too. Diet is clean 95% of the time save for the occasional beer on the weekend. Last night I had 2. Today is Sun so I'll be leniant with what I eat...but I wont gorge or over indulge. Monday is heavy leg day so I'll carb up tonight and that's it for simple carbs until next Sun. Save for my cup of plain oatmeal I eat every morning. I'll feel puffier and a bit tired with all the carbs tomorrow but when I start squatting it'll pay.....last week was 315 for 10 followed by 225lbs for a 20 reps, and thats immediate! I get 2 guys stipping weights and I just go. Tomorrow big day....I'm gonna try for 415lb squat for a min of 6-8 times, with a 500lb leg press till exhaustion...which is usually 15...and my 12 I have guys helping me. Last week I threw up...but I am as addicted to this as one could be to drugs. Eat healthy, exercise your body...for me that just opened alot of doors in my life. |

All I want to add is that while P90x can work for you if you adhere to it, you can't really get around informing yourself about basic diet and how it works for you and your lifestyle.
I cannot stick to any fitness diet I've ever seen. Most especially what they prescribe for breakfast. I'm super active, my job is extremely physically demanding and I have a ton of outdoor hobbies. If I eat cereal in the morning, I'm on my ass by 10am. No way, no how. I've tried everything, even went up to 4 bowls of the stuff. Works fine for some people, maybe even the majority, but for people like me breakfast is what's it all about. Just don't eat crap. Stay healthy, but you're going to have to do some research as to what works for you. First, what do you like? What of that is healthy? And then try it. What works well enough to get you going in the morning. Also, excercise lightly before you eat breakfast, otherwsie you're going to feel sluggish after you eat. If you still feel that way even after excercising first, you're eating the wrong foods for your body and blood type. P90x and other plans like this are tailor made for the average person, but doesn't neccessarily fit you and your lifestyle 100% so do the research. It's your health, can't get more important than that. I also agree with one of the other posts that this isn't what you should be jumping into if you are really out of shape. Doesn't neccessarily have anything to do with being overweight, you can be skinny and hopelessly out of shape as well. |

My wife and I are doing the Insanity program right now and are really enjoying the program. I have never been a work out video or group exercise person so I have been pleasantly surprised and impressed. I typically run and lift weights and the insanity program has been a nice change up and I am seeing great results. Plus learning a few things to take into my other routines
As a number of people have said there are two parts to the work out program the actual exercise and watching what you eat / proper diet. Good luck. |
