This isn't on or about me, but a potential former co-worker: If you knew something that meant lives were on the line due to another person's negligence, but told by your superior that due to privacy B.S. you could not report it to the authorities, would you:
A - Bite your tongue and do as you are told because, well, it's a paycheck B - Do what is right even if it means you won't be clocking in the next day |

If there are lives on the line you report it. There are laws that would protect your job.

Privacy BS? what are they doing coming to work high or something? I would go above your supervisor...thats the point of having a chain of command, document what you told him and if he threatened you and go from there, if its a corporate job you should even safer

I would definitely go with B.
Also, depending on what field he is in, he could be in more trouble for NOT reporting it. In the medical field, we're mandated reporters. Yes, we have HIPAA (privacy act), but in certain cases, you are mandated to call the authorities and report abuse, neglect, etc... If he does get fired for protecting other people, I imagine your friend would possibly have some sort of legal protection maybe from unsafe working conditions, vindictive firing practices, or whatever the case happens to be.

Try Air Traffic Control, guy called, could not listen to a freakin' game VIA AN EARBUD hidden UNDER ONE SIDE OF HIS HEADPHONES while IN THE CONTROL TOWER! When the rep went to our supervisor and told her about the situation, she was told (and I'm paraphrasing here) to assist the customer and move on, we cannot report the situation due to account privacy.
Needless to say, she probably won't be coming back (she went home early to contact the FAA {has his name, etc}) and the ones who know the situation (me and another co-worker) could very well not show up next week. I'm actually at work right now getting REALLY irritated knowing more and more about how #@$% is done here. |

That is damned scary if you don't mind my saying. The right answer is always the lives that are on the line. Human life trumps privacy, trumps profit, trumps everything.
At least it does in my happy rainbow world.
