So my girl just left for the weekend to visit her parents (out of state). In anticipation of my impending bachelorhood i bought a loaf of pumpernickel bread and a pound of liverwurst at the store last night. Within minutes of her car leaving the driveway I made myself the biggest, fattest liverwurst sandwich i had ever seen and then promptly devoured it.
She is not a fan of the 'wurst and so i generally do not buy it along with Pepsi, whole milk and a few other choice items (Jack Daniels) and it isn't a big deal but it got me thinking if there was anybody out there in Tankland that shared my pain? Post up. |

Im not a fussy eater but I HATE spicy food. Makes me puke. The only thing we REALLY dont see eye to eye on is heart and liver. I LOVE both, she doesnt care for heart and HATES liver. However, the first time I shot a deer at the beginning of our relationship (she was sort of anti-gun and anti-hunting but pro meat) I had a bag full of blood in the freezer. She didnt want to even try it, now its her favorite. You never know.

Its the BEST gravy/marinade ever!
I will ONLY shoot if its a clean kill shot, i.e., heart/lungs. The heart will bleed out into the body cavity and I carry a few of those huge gallon ziplocks with me. When I cut it open, I make a small incision and collect the blood in the bag/bags. It goes in the freezer like that. The way I cook most of the meat is to cut it into small chunks or strips depending on the cut. Put it into a frying pan with mushrooms, onions, green peppers and diced garlic. Use as much as you like of each. Ill cut a chunk of the frozen blood the night before depending on how much I need and put it in the fridge to thaw. I dump it into the pan before I put anything else in and it usually covers about 1/4" of the bottom. After putting in the meat and veggies Ill add a small amount of water if needed. Cook until the meat is tender and the blood is nice and thick. AMAZING! Sounds gross, Im sure, but it isnt. If Im cooking backstraps (the BEST part of a deer) Ill do the same prep to thaw the blood, then let the meat soak in it with whatever other marinade (teriyaki, etc.) for a good 24 hours and put it on the grill or in the pan with veggies. Its absolutely amazing. PS: Blood sausage isnt my favorite, although like anything, its an acquired taste. I know plenty of people who eat it. Everyday, no thanks. Once in a while, a piece or two. |
