So I got the call from the wife yesterday there was no heat. Called a repairman who told me my boiler, which is original to the house build in 1956, has finally died. It was an oil furnace converted to natural gas. Appearently the pilot light was so corroded it fell out. We're just luck the pilot went out when it happened.
I went with a reputable local company and got a quote for a new one for $4,400. I have no choice but to suck it up and have one installed. It'll make a dent in our savings but with 2 kids and temps still in the 30's at night, it must be done. Luckily I'll have heat again by Thursday. Plus, the new one will be about 83% efficient compared to the old one which was less than 60%. So I'm looking forward to a reduced heating bill. A new boiler was on our home-improvement list but not a priority. We were hoping to first install new windows in all 3 bedrooms first, followed by a remodeled bathroom, insulation in the attic, and a new front door. Looks like everythings on hold for now. On the bright side I won an NCAA pool that funded a new screen door. Come on fellow home owners, commiserate with me. Let's talk about the grief that comes with homeownership. |

Just completely sided the house this past year. Next on our list is the front porch being completely torn out and redone. Hopefully we'll get to it next year. By the time that is done, we'll need to redo the garage. By then the roof will likely need replacing. However, I'm hoping against hope that the market turns around enough to unload it and get the hell out of New York for good. :/

I won't drag anything from the other thread into this one, but I'll give you the lowdown on our STAR program and why it sucks. It effectively takes the taxes paid from the citizens upstate, and puts them to use giving NYC an across the board 6% tax break on their school taxes. Interesting, because their tax base is WAAAAAYYYY higher. Even crazier is they put it right in the budget in black and white and people don't even read it. There's alot more behind that, but you know how it goes. :/ There are a few states me and my girl have our eye on, but we gotta take care of business here and wait out this mess before we make our move.

Boiler in my home bust in 2008. After about 25 years running. It was O.L.D. It was the same boiler in the home since my parents and I originally moved in when I was 8. We'd been having some extremely cold winters here in the UK and whilst we also have gas fires in the house I prefered using central heating to warm the house up. One night I heard a sound much like a car screeching to a halt....Twas the boiler....
One of the most reputable, and sadly expensive companies to use here is British Gas, they also provide my Gas for the house so called a guy out. Basically the boiler was fucked, and the central heating was also on the fritz because over the years gunk had been collecting inside all the radiators and pipes (something to do with central heating etc over here) and the upshot of it was: new combined boiler, power flush the entire central heating, put new thermostats in the house, a timer system and a new thingymagik in my old room that regulated it all...regulator thats it...duh. Anyhow, the house used to have a boiler in the bathroom and one in the kitchen hence the combined unit being better. Total cost in USD? Around $12,503.28 cents... The WORST part of it all wasn't the cost, it was when the bastard that came to do the work asked to use my toilet and was barely in there for 5 mins in total silence, flushes the loo and comes back downstairs...I go up for a shower and a shit and low and behold the guy had BLOCKED the toilet with his mixed cement style shit that had blocked all the way up and beyond the U BEND! I spent at least 30 mins CLEANING it all....Bastard. He must've ate a curry or chilli beef or something as partially digested food was still visible.... Nice.... |

You had a boiler from 1956 and a bathroom remodel was on the priority list before the boiler?
Really? The bathroom should have been the last on the list. Getting insulation in the attic, new windows and new boiler will probably pay for most of the new bathroom in the differences in heating bill. Plus your forgetting something more important. "If it aint broke dont fix it". Looking at the big picture doesn't do any good if you don't have a clear view. |

I hate my tub...entirely too small and I really can't get a bigger one in it. Showers it is. Oh well..there are worse problems. I had my home built the way I wanted...helped with about half of the work.
It is paid for except property taxes...which keep going up.
