Okay, so Im looking into FINALLY upgrading our 90's TV to a Flatscreen! Yah!
But there's so much to decide. Ive done some research already but I still have some questions. 1) LCD or LED? - Which is safer? (I have children so this is a concern for us) - With our usage (see below) is one better or would there be little to no difference? - I don't want pictures blurring when we watch action scenes. Is this an issue? 2) We need to be able to use the internet on it. (one of the things we want to do is to watch live webcasts (i think they are called)) But also things that I download to my computer or videos from Hulu or youtube. etc etc. INFO: Usage: We don't have cable. (and we don't want it) All we do is watch movies (DVD's) or things I've downloaded off the computer or play xbox 360 on it. (I might/probably will someday upgrade to a BluRay player. Maybe next year) Pricing: I would like at VERY LEAST 42", but preferably 46"-50". (I gotta try to keep the pricing around the $600-$700 mark if possible. (I can probably go $750ish if need be, but $800 is definite a cap) Internet: We have wireless capability. Connecting a cable to my router is not an option as our computer is on the opposite end of the house. Location: The TV will be 12 OR 19 feet from us (depending on where we put it) That's all the info I can think would be pertinent. Feel free to ask me anything else that might be useful. That's about the extent of it. Any help is appreciated my friends! Thanks! Here are some TV's I am looking at from Walmart.com: LED Philips 46" Class LED-LCD 1080p 120Hz HDTV, 1.57" Slim Design, 46PFL7505D/F7 - $749 VIZIO 42" Class Razor LED-LCD 1080p 120Hz HDTV, 1.99" Ultra-Slim Design, M420NV - $669 LCD VIZIO 47" Class LCD 1080p HDTV 120Hz,E470VL - $709 (this one is not currently in stock and so may not be available at this price) Let me know if you guys need any more info! I have read your comments thus far and I really appreciate the help.

first thing i noticed was your comment about contrast ratio is off. Here's a few things to keep in mind:
-Contrast ratio is determined by the manufacturer so you can't compare a samsungs 100,000:1 to Sony's 400,000:1 becuase they might be equal. It's just an inflated number that companys make up. It's only usefull when your comparing 2 TV's of the SAME brand. -next is you should really consider getting some form of HD cable or dish as without it your really wasting your LCD or LED TV. -3rd, you also need to consider your mhz. they come in 60, 120, and 240. This is just as important if not more then if your TV is 720p, 1080i or 1080p Last edited by Monkeywrench; 03-24-2011 at 03:03 AM.. |

I'm actually looking into buying a new TV this summer. I'm currently rolling with:
Samsung 55" LCD 60 hz, 1080p. I have HD cable but rarely watch it except sports like UFC, NFL and NBA. I have a blu ray player that gets plenty of use and I'm a big time PS3 gamer. I'm looking to stick with Samsung cuz that's my favorite brand(phone, monitor, TV and pretty much anything I can). Looking to stay in the 55-65" range. I definitly wanna upgrade to 120(maybe 240) and of course 1080p. |

keep in mind that all LED TV's are really LCD TV's. They are the same thing. LED has upgraded lights in the TV. The main advantage with LED(to not bore or confuse you) is with Black colors. Black lines/colors etc look much better on LED tv's then LCD tv's only.

I'm going to throw in a question that someone maybe able to answer...
My wife and I are also looking to buy a flatscreen also. Based on our living room set-up, and our budget, we have a pretty good idea of what we want. We've shopped around and looked at several different models at several different stores. For the same amount of money I can get a bigger Vizio at Walmart than a more recognized name brand anywhere else. What are you're thoughts on Vizio brand? And I know the Walmart haters will say not to buy one there, but the RCA TV we have now was bought at Walmart over 20 years ago and had no problems up until recently. |

The refresh rates aren't a factor until you hit the 40"+ sizes. 240hz is ridiculous and youre just paying for a marketing buzz word. You will never see a difference between 120 and 240, and most of the 240's arent truly 240.
I've got a 46" Sony LCD with 120 and I could see a difference between it and a another 46" Sony that was 60hz. The image looks a little sharper. As MonkeyWrench said, LCD and LED are the same things, just a difference in the backlight. Some lower-end LEDs only have the LED lighting around the edges, and you'll see that they look brighter in the corners than the center of the image. If you go to a Best Buy or someplace to look at them out, the brightness is going to be messed up because all of the new TVs have a DEMO mode versus a Home mode. Demo mode is extremely bright so it stands out against the other TVs, and places like Best Buy have poor ambient light anyway. I'd recommend narrowing your choice down, then taking a blu-ray movie with you and ask them to hook up a player specifically to that TV so you can see what it's going to look like. If they want to sell you a $1000 TV, they will do this for you. |
