Looking at pics like the one in the original post, and having been a kid in the 80s, I'm reminded again just how anomalous this moment in history was. I read a lot of comments on here and elsewhere complaining about the current state of the toy industry as though the 80s action figure boom represented the norm--a natural order just waiting to be restored through proper marketing or brand management.
Nah. This was a complete aberration. A bizarre, beautiful moment in time experienced by a single generation, never to happen again. |

I remember seeing a couple FLAGGS on the top shelf of the GI Joe aisle for months. Eventually they went on clearance for like $80 and I almost bought one but got a Nintendo game instead lol.
Most of my vehicles got trashed in some way over the years throughout moves and improper storage. I doubt the FLAGG would have been any different |

I still love Street Fighter as much as I did in 1987, but I'd happily eliminate every video game from existence if it got kids back into physical toys and comic books.

I sort of wonder if that photo doesn't foreshadow why that era ended.
Virtually all of those vehicles are C-list or lower offerings. And they have a million of them.

The lower price point vehicles are where G.I. Joe thrived. Not every kid could afford a Mauler or Night Raven (much less a Terror Drome or USS Flagg), but almost every boy in America had a Ferret and/or an AWE Striker.

My family was broke so my family could only buy me figures during the year with the occasional small vehicle a couple times a year and then maybe at Christmas I got one large vehicle.

Very impressive 1988 pic. of the Joes @ TRU - fantastic. I had stopped collecting ARAH in '87, but still went there to look for other collectibles after that...and I did check out some of the '88-on Joes ATT. It was amazing to walk into that store & see the vast amount of toys & choices to pick from.
