Purchased this in a lot on eBay recently and have had no luck researching it. The stamp on the wing only says "ERTL Dyersville, Iowa 52040 MADE IN USA".
It's a really cool jet, actually. No bombs or missles were included but they obviously came with some, judging by the slots underneath. The top half is diecast and the bottom half is plastic. You'll see in one of the pics that the landing gear is very similar to the Skystriker, although there is no lever on the body to bring down or retract the gear; the tab on the front wheel is used. Also the red buttons on the top extend through the wing and act as a mechanism to (presumably) make bombs drop, kind of like the Thunderwing Jet. The detachable verticle stabilizers are plastic, and identical as far as I can tell. It came with no stickers applied. As far as compatibility with figures goes, Ace fits in the cockpit very well while Wild Bill fits fairly well, with a little bit of squeezing and adjusting his torso and legs. I have had ZERO luck searching the web for info. Can anyone help date it? Did Ertl make any other aircraft like this?

That's pretty cool. I wish I knew where it came from. The die-cast top seems like an odd thing. Is it really heavy?

Yes, it is noticeably quite heavier than a Skystriker or Rattler - as UNCLASSIFIED there will attest to.

It's from Ertl's "Force One" series. Primarily small die-cast vehicles and models. This one is in the 1989 catalog:

I think I'll add some Skystriker stickers from Cobrastickers.com too. I'll post some pics when that occurs... Many thanks, Tankers!

I passed on one of these at Goodwill about a month ago. The one I saw was missing the canopy and had a bunch of decals on it. It is a weird scale. Too small for joes, more in line with MASK-size figures. I thought it was from the early 80's, but I guess Shogi nailed it in 89.

Not that weird - an actual 1/18 scale F-15 Eagle would be 42.5 inches long (or just over 3 1/2 feet). This happens to be a 1/40 jet that fits 1/18 figures, which is not that uncommon (see: just about anything Hasbro did that's based on a real vehicle).
