Ah, another year, another Superbowl. My hat's off to the Green Bay Packers and their fans. You guys played a great game.
While watching the game, I began to think about a figure from the "A Real American Hero" days. No, not Captain Grid-Iron, but the man, the myth, the legend himself...William "The Fridge" Perry. Now, I've never been a Bears fan, but for anyone who grew up in the 80's, The Fridge and the Superbowl shuffle were commonplace among conversations after that season's superbowl (played in 1986), where the Chicago Bears beat the New England Pats 46-10. The Fridge was a Behemoth of a man, weighing in at just under 400 pounds (382 to be exact) and lived up to his namesake..he was as big as a Fridge and anyone who tried had a tough time moving him. Well, while we're talking 1985-86, I think it's safe to say that those two years were key for ARAH, giving us characters like Hawk, Low-Light, B.A.T., Tomax & Xamot, Lady Jaye, Serpentor and many more. That year's mail-away figure was indeed a special one, as it tied the popularity of an NFL player with the G.I.Joe mythos...and alas, The Fridge joined the ranks as a Physical Training Instructor (WTF?). Attempting to make sense of the marriage, The Fridge's filecard reads as follows: "If Lacrosse is the little brother of war, Football must be the rich uncle. Note the similarities - Strategy (Offense & Defense), Team work, Violence, Camaraderie, Television Coverage, Parades for the victors and Humiliation for the defeated." Although I was quick to gather up my Flag Points in order to add The Fridge to my ranks, it never really made sense. So my question to you is this: Do you think The Fridge is a good addition as a PT Instructor or no? Why/Why not? DISCUSS! |

Why not? He's just instructing, not leading men into combat.

The Fridge is great...just like Sgt. Slaughter, he was toned up a bit for his action figure, and that's just fine. Only problem with Fridge is that he never really got any fiction to support him.

In 1991, he was supposed to have a Starting Lineup figure made for him. But the idea was scratched at the last minute. On some figures you will see his name listed on the back of the package, and even a few cards and coins floating around from the year. But the figure was never made. Its amazing how he got a GI Joe figure, but couldn't get a sports action figrue.

Right on! I only managed to get one at the time, but never really brought him in to battle, so he stayed in pretty decent shape.

True, but he never really seemed the "Physical" type. Not to knock the guy, but his role always seemed more as "brick wall" than "rolling tank". As a Joe PT Instructor, I think guys like Beach Head have more of an advantage as opposed to someone who's main characteristic is that of immovable. I still love the figure/character though, go figure (lol). |

I think the Fridge was one of the last sports stars that really felt like a role model for kids. (Sorry Kobe). That's not to say he was any better or worse than any other sports star in reality... just that in the 80's with GI JOE and ProStars in the 90's... the sports stars seemed to have a bit of a "cushion" that stars today do not. And of course there was the $$$$$ and hopes that putting someone like the Fridge in the Joe line would attract new consumers... er... I mean kids.
To answer your question, YES I think he still works because essentially his effectiveness outweighed his actual 'job description' with the Bears. Like when they had him as an offensive lineman to shake things up. And that's kinda what separates Joes from non-Joes right? I'm speaking fictionally of course. That there's something they can do that other 'joes' cannot. I think I'm using 'joes'/'Joes' too loosely here. heheheh. Does that make sense? To answer the question you didn't ask... NO I don't think there's any sports players today who would make more sense in the position cuz really they're all publicly tainted for the most part. I think Tiger Force Woods would be amusing and MAYBE Night Force Urlacher would make me giggle... but that's about it. The world (both sports and toys and sports toys)... is so different now. I dunno.
