Hey all
Last week, I posted a question asking what you guys would pay for a minty USS Flagg. I appreciate all the input I received and it definitely helped in the negotiations, but, alas, the seller wanted too much (more than what most of you were telling me was fair). Good news is that I have a bead on another nearly complete Flagg, but bad news is that it's part and parcel of a larger vintage collection (seller won't break up it to sell individually). I was hoping to get Tankers' opinions on what would be a fair price for a vintage Joe collection, spanning 1982-87 and including nearly 70 figures and 40+ vehicles. From what I can tell, everything is in great condition, with vast majority of figs and vehicles complete - rare damage and a few missing items here and there. Highlights include 99% complete FLagg with fair condition box, complete Hydrofoil, tactical battle platform, original Joe headquarters, Skystriker, rattler, WHALE, MBT (well, some of those may not be highlights for some of you but since I'm starting my collection over, everything is a highlight for me!). However, no Terror Drome or Defiant or Night Raven. Ballpark estimates are fine - again, want to be fair but don't want to overpay. Thanks for your help!! |

Obviously depending the condition of everything, if everything in the lot was something I'd want, I'd pay $500. Of course, I don't collect vintage much, so I could be off, but I don't think I'm too far off.
The seller will likely want more though; everyone thinks their stuff is worth much more than people would actually pay for it |

The seller will likely want more though; everyone thinks their stuff is worth much more than people would actually pay for it Then again there are some people out there who aren't looking to make a buck and just want to clear out some space. Offer what you want to pay and see if the seller bites. After that it's time to negotiate. Never pay more than what you can afford to spare. I've bought things from members on here and elsewhere for prices way lower than what they usually go for on eBay just because they needed money quick and were happy to help out a fellow fan knowing that their items were going to someone who would appreciate them. With that being said I never like to use eBay as a way to give an item a "what it's worth" value because if that were true everyone wouldn't hesitate to auction off their items there in order to get top dollar. There are still some people in this world who just don't care about things like that, and that's very nice to know. Good luck on your purchase.

If you're talking street value, there is about $800 worth of vehicles just from what you listed (assuming complete and good condition). Add the rest of the vehicles and all of the figures and you're looking at a $1,300-1,500 lot, if not more. If there are other rarer figures or vehicles in there the value could easily reach $2,000.

I'm with volleydan on this one... however, as cliche as it sounds, it's really how much you are willing to pay. I started collecting (trying to piece together all of my old long-lost toys) back in November... There have been times when I've gotten really good deals, and other times I've paid too much simply because I was trying to get one vehicle, figure, or accessory from a lot. So... unless you are into the retail aspect (reselling), pay what you are comfortable with, not necessarily "what its worth."

It really depends on what vehicles and how complete they are....If you start missing pieces like moray lens cap, TBP guns and missiles, JUMP jet pack hose, broken MMS wire, any piece off the Whale, etc you start deducting--I wouldn't buy anything that wasn't inventoried unless he was giving it to me for less than a thousand. A 99% complete Flagg is easily worth $500-600 alone (as long as it is truly 99% complete). A $20 guide can easily solve your problems where completeness is concerned.

You are going to get a discount for buying the entire collection, and you should get a discount for no selling fees or shipping, taxes, etc. That said when buying bulk figures I would verify that over 75-80% are 100% complete and in good shape. Then I wouldn't pay more than $5-8 (I'd lean towards 5) average for figure. Vehicles are a whole different ballgame. Skystrikers that are complete without the parachutes get up to 70 or 80 bucks in really good shape, Whale's can easily get 80 if there are no missing parts, If the HQ has the cameras and no broken tabs on the jail can get 60+. Moray is generally around 40. An OG Rattler with all parts and damaged panels can get 60+. You see where I'm going?

The question is.. Was he once a collector and isn't collecting anymore.. or are these things that he had as a child and just took really good care of? If they are childhood toys, he probably doesn't know the going rate of things and is more than likely just clearing them out to make room. I would throw out a $350 - $500 price out there if this is the case.. If he is a collector that is just getting out of the vintage scene, you are going to have a problem getting out cheap on this. Especially if the Flagg and Skystriker are 99% complete.
throw a number you are comfortable with and see where is goes from there. The worst he can say is "No" and you haggle from there on. Maybe you can reach a reasonable agreement and maybe you will just have to walk away. Either way.. There is no harm in trying. Good Luck

All of the advice and insight is really helpful! Gotta love this site!!
I think I will pick up that price guide. However, I found this site last night while doing research on prices: G.I. Joe Price Guide 3 3/4". Have any of you used it? I'm using the prices on there as a guide for what I should offer the seller. The seller is a knowledgeable collector and knows what he has, so lowballing will not work with him (and wouldn't want to do that anyway as he's selling to help pay for medical bills). I do want to be fair to him and his family. After negotiations, I am hoping to pay somewhere between $900 and $1000. Do you guys think that's fair value? |
