On behalf of a lot of us grown kids who were out of the game for years and are finally back. What happened for 1995, 1996 and 1999?
I can't find anything Joe related out there for those years. More for curiosity then anything. Thanks.

Pretty simple, Hasbro didn't make anything during those years.* 1997 was the start of the 15th Anniversary line. Kinda like the 25th Line, Hasbro rode it for a while, then a little too long, then things got weird with the VvV stuff and the new figure body types... Then Sigma Six sorta killed things again.
*Unless you count GI Joe Extreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeme and the Savage stuff. Last edited by Hicks_Royel; 01-28-2011 at 06:52 AM.. |

I quit collecting in 1988 or so when I was in 6th grade. When I was in med school in the late 90's/early 00's, I remember going to TRU to buy my bros-in-law some toys and I would always check out the action figs. I remember seeing some of the VvV stuff, and I almost got back into collecting. But it wasn't until 07 when I did get back into collecting and discovered yojoe.com that I was surprised to find that no Joes were made during those years. I guess I just assumed Joes would always be around in the form I knew them in as a kid.

94 was..... TEH END OF THE LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Really, Joes weren't selling, and Hasbro basically shelved the brand. There was some prototype stuff (that I'm sure some people here would be glad to wax poetically on) and canceled items that didn't make it to the stores. So, for the next years, GI was really just the 12" line. I got out of the domestic market around 1990, got back into ARAH and the foreign stuff when Ebay first came out in the late 90's and back into 'active' collecting when the 25th toys hit.

Hall of Fame continued into 1995, Sgt Savage debuted, and both were replaced in 1996 by the 12" Classic Collection and GIJoe Extreme, respectively. Extreme was Kenner's version of GIJoe, in the vein of their Batman toys (which was built off the success of the legendary Super Powers line of the 80s). Bulky 5" figures with action features as the main selling point was practically the only kind of figure on the market at that point. The GIJoe brand was alive and well for the 2 years that Kenner had control. By 1997, Hasbro's people took the brand back (probably the first step toward closing the Kenner offices and taking control of their home-grown brands again, which occurred in 1999). The 1997 15th Anniversary figures and the 12" Classic Collection were both Hasbro developed lines, getting back to the roots of the two uber-successful GIJoe incarnations. |

Technically, the brand lived on. It was just the 4" line that was canceled. When Hasbro and Kenner merged in 1993 (and consolidated in 1994) Kenner's Cincinnati operation took control of the Boy's Toys division, shelving the Real American Hero Joes and putting Sgt Savage out as a stop-gap while they revised G.I.Joe as a more Kenner-friendly brand.
