Im looking into the history of Hasbro and Gi Joe.Well looking on gijoeinformation.com in the 3 3/4 inch album theres is a pic of Zartan , his filecard , and a newspaper clipping reading "Hasbro Apologizes for description of doll".Does anyone know anything about this.I tried to google it but came up with nothing.Seems they didnt want to offend the mentally challenged but thats all the photo says.If ya know anything about this , help a brother out.Below is a link to the picture.

Hasbro originally listed Zartan as an "Extreme paranoid schizophrenic" with "multiple personalities" which may have offended people who actually suffered from that.

They changed the filecard so that it does not say extreme paranoid schizophrenic. The "schizo" filecard as it is known is rarer to find than the updated PC version and can actually add a good bit of value to a MISB version of the Chameleon Swamp Skier with Zartan since the correction was made early in production after a few sets were sent out. Kids were eager for Zartan so they teared the box apart when the initial run came out and few survived intact MISB. As for just getting the "schizo" filecard at a reasonable price it is fairly doable since many people do not know that there are two versions so you find sellers mix them with the PC versions without any special note of their rarity.

What I mean is that it is a good selling point if the bidders involved cared. Even though it is indeed rarer most collectors could careless about variations in file cards unless the original card of any variation was itself rare like a Rumbler for instance. During the 80's it was a big deal but in this day and age where slander is as common as night and day the change is considered meek in the PC department. People would not even bat an eye on this unless the filecard had lead in it. Last edited by rhodium1977; 12-29-2010 at 07:42 AM.. |

That explains why one kid came across Zartan and had him MONTHS before the rest of us were able to find him in the stores.

Honestly, I've never seen the updated PC version of the card, so I've always considered it rarer. I bought the Schizo version for $1 a few years back from a vintage toy store

Most folks think the Schizo card is rarer but its the other way around. Its harder to find the PC version.
