Per Yojoe: There are two versions of Zartan's filecard. The first version references Zartan's schizophrenia and multiple personalities. After complaints that the filecard was misleading people into thinking schizophrenia and multiple personality disorder were one and the same, Hasbro changed the filecard and the second version does not mention either one. |

I believe I have this news clipping somewhere. I'll try to dig it out and type up what it said here.

multiple personalities has never been proven - in fact there is evidence against that it even exists.
Schizophrenia on the other hand is a real psychological condition, most bi-polar back in the day were misdiagnosed as Schizophrenic. Having Schizo on the filecard might not have been PC even back then, it's basically saying something like this: "this is Elmo, he's crazy!" In this day and age, it would just be noteworthy for the character as information flow about certain things - even mental disorders - are fairly common knowledge or can be googled by kids for better understanding. I can see how in that day and age, in combination with how G.I.Joe was presenting itself to kids, that it could be disturbing to parents. |

Here's an interesting read regarding this issue:
SSRN-Zartan the Enemy (B) by Alexander Horniman, Denise Etheridge Click "One-Click Download" to read the pdf. Warning: They continually refer to G.I. Joes as "dolls." Tsk tsk. Here's a summary: It's a paper (written in 1986) from the business department at the University of Virginia and it discusses Hasbro's response to the 100 or so complaints they received regarding Zartan's file card (the number of toys sold was "almost a million"). It seems most of the excitement came about because of an organization called Thresholds (a "nonprofit psychosocial-rehabilitation facility") and their claims that they would buy up all the Zartans and throw them in a bonfire to "embarrass" Hasbro. The last line of the paper sums it up best: "This does not seem like ethical behavior for an organization [Thresholds] charged with improving the welfare of the mentally ill." The paper mostly sides with Hasbro on the issue and commends them for a quick response despite the fact that a relatively tiny percentage of people had a problem with the wording. The paper agrees that Hasbro committed a "breach of ethical responsibility" with the wording on the file card, but basically says they did all the right things after the card made it out to the public. |

I don't think what Hasbro wrote on the filecard was anything to get upset over. It's not like they were poking fun at the condition. The simple fact that they created Zartan as character with a mental condition is nothing to get offended about. That's like saying you can't ever make a fictional movie or write a story about anyone having any kind of mental problem or handicap.
It's not as bad as being "Coo Coo for Cocoa Puffs!" |
