I always thought with Gung-Ho they went with the world war II or Korea look, where the camo at the time would quickly fade/bleach and look like Gung-ho does after a few weeks.
Airborne always baffled me with the blue though. |

The old woodland cammies tended to fade to a blueish green color and it happened a lot to the Marine ones because during deployments the salt water would make the process happen faster. So if your wondering what a salty Marine is Sgt Humpty said it. I think the flack jacket also did the same thing and that is what Gung-Ho is waring.

Well you take your clothes to the laundramat and they say not to dye clothes there, but you know that some people do.

Maybe to make them stand out on the pegs?
The first wave of figures were all in green and olive drabs. The blues catch your eyes. It was still a relatively new toyline when those figures were released. I remember going to TRU back then, GI Joe shared an aisle with Star Wars and Transformers. Those were some bright and flashy figures. Some colors may have been needed to attract 7 year olds attention to that section of the aisle? |

I'll agree that the real world explanation probably is that Hasbro just wanted to add some color to the line to make them stand out from the mostly green first wave.
But I like the explanation that shipboard Marine BDU's would fade to a blue color due to the salt air. 25th Gung Ho - old BDU's CP Gung Ho - new BDU's
