When G.I.Joe was released in 1982 most of the figures were in varrying shades of green with the exception of Snake-Eyes and Scarlett. In 1983 we saw the team roster expand with more specialties. We had the SCUBA guy, the snow guy, a medic, a helecopter pilot, a jet pilot, an explosives guy, and a female tank driver.
Then there was the Marine and the airborne trooper...in blue and teal... I've always wonderd why Gung Ho and Airborne were blue instead of green. The 25th comic 2-pack Gung Ho in green looks WAY better and makes more sense than the original blue color scheme. Airborne's vest would look better green as well. So why were Gung Ho and Airborne blue instead of green? 1. Did somebody at Hasbro say, "We have too much green already. Make them a different color. How about blue?" 2. Did the color code for the figures get mistyped on the design specs sent to China? 3. Did the seven year old at the factory in China mix the paint wrong, and instead of telling his boss and getting a beating, he kept his mouth shut? Has there ever been an official Hasbro answer? Has anybody else ever wondered this? What do you guys think?

Yeah probably just an error in color.

uh, I'd venture to guess that it was "because they are TOYS". Who cares if it makes sense militarily... kids like variety and color. I know I always liked Gung Ho and Airborne BECAUSE they were blue. Never once did I say, "well... this doesn't make sense - this guy is a marine - and marines wear green"

If Gung Ho's vest was green, he would clash with the indian, policeman, construction worker, and the other members of his band.

Meh...special unit operators aren't limited to the military issue stuff. Like if the company Wiley X decided they wanted to try out their new kevlar knuckle gloves and sent them to special units to field test -- then the guys in the unit would be happy to do so. Even if they were a dark purple instead of digital gray, or beige or black etc.
Can't speak for Airborne's blue other than it blends in with the sky, which makes sense from a toymaker's view... Now I've seen current Navy units that have blue camo fatigues, and since the Marines often fell under Dept of the Navy umbrella (not sure how true that is these days), that old Gung Ho figure was 25 years ahead of its time In my unit we have Air Force guys who wear Army uniforms so it doesn't matter what branch of service your in a lot of times. |

Maybe they wear blue because they think it looks good?

the airborne being blue because of the sky kinda makes sense. Gung Ho might be blue as a kinda homage to the marine's dress blues. Maybe they just didn't want to go too dark.

I'd say it's probably because first, they're toys so they need to look different to set each figure apart...
...and second, after the first wave, none of the figures really follow anything that could called a typical military uniform. |
