I need some help. I am a fan and avid collector of the entire GI Joe 3 ¾” line. My collection is a passion and a fulfilling hobby. My curse, I have to have 1 of everything. I collect everything from toys to bath products. Greeting cards to GI Joe licensed food products. For years I have sought knowledgeable collectors to assist me in identifying the variants. Below is a list of some variants that I either suspect (because I have them) and those that have been rumored. If you can please provide me some “confirmation” that they do exist.
1982 “Straight arm figure thumb variations”. Are there figures out there that were produced with multiple thumbs? Or is it simply that different figures have different thumb types? Example: is there a “Grunt” figure straight arm with a thin and a thick thumb? JUMP “hole variation for the laser blaster” is the small hole / large hole exclusive to a particular year of the JUMP or was the small hole simply for 1982 and the large hole for 1983? 1983 Wild Bill color variations. I have a clear color variation for the brown paint application on Wild Bill (light vs. dark). Is there also a green color application variation? Headquarters. Aside from the storage area slat vs. no slat variation. Does anyone have a confirmation of the lt. grey vs dark grey coloring of he accessories for the headquarters? Polar Battle Bear. Is there a light grey vs. dark grey variant? Or is one of these simply the mail away version? Wolverine. Is there a light vs. dark variant? Or is one of these the mail away version? Is there a version that comes with and another without the tow hook? 1984 Deep Six. Is there a variation for his eye / eyebrow and hair color? Light vs. dark? Rip cord. I have figures and some “variations”. 1. His hair is light and on another figure it is darker. 2. the chute has 1 hole stamped in it or two holes stamped in to it. 3.helmet w/ holes or a helmet w/out holes. 4. Chute and mask that are hard vs. soft. Rattler. I have 2 clear versions. A “normal blue” with part number M3647-1 on the tail wings and a “dark blue” version with part number M3647-2 on the tail wing. Is there a third “lighter blue” version or is mine just sun faded very evenly? Water Moccasin. I have a light and a dark version. Is one of hese the mail away or is the a variation? WHALE. What is the deal with the launch doors (I have 3 different versions)? And why is there some parts in light olive drab and some in dark green? 1985 Dusty. I have a light camo and a dark camo paint version. Is this a variation? Shipwreck. Is there a variation to his tattoo on the first version of the figure? Crimson Guard. Light color and dark color variations? Eels. I have fins with different numbers stamped on them, variation? Tomax / Xamot. Is there a silver gun variation or is mine just painted well for a custom? Armadillo. Is there a light vs. dark variant? Or is one of these the mail away version? AWE Striker. Is there a light vs. dark variant? Or is one of these the mail away version? Cobra Bunker. Is there a light vs. dark variant? Or is one of these the mail away version? MORAY Hydrofoil. I have searchlights with either a #1 stamped in it or a #2. variant? Bridgelayer. Is there a light vs. dark variant? Or is one of these the mail away version? Trubble Bubble. Is there a variant of the spiked mine? 1986 Beach head. Is there a hard vs soft version of his ammo case? Dial Tone. Is there a hair color / gloves variation? Lift Ticket. I have 3 different versions. They variations consist of yellow color vs. flesh tone face. And the strip on his helmet is either thick or thin. Finally his helmet is either a deep red or normal red. Anyone else see this? Is there a variation also with his leg knife? Motor Viper. How many color versions are there with the head paint? Viper. Is there a variant for the size of the back pack hole? Terror Drome. Is there a color variation of the red painted parts? Or is this sun damage? 1987 Falcon. I have a MOC version and a loose sample. The color of the belt is different. Any other confirmations? Blaster. Is there a thick / thin handle variant of his weapon like other BF2000 figures? Sgt. Slaughters Renegades. Did the file cards come in both grey and tan versions? Zanzibar. Is his mustache in a short and long variant version? I have 3 different versions of the color of the accessories for the air skiff. Is there a variant? Cobra La. Did the file cards come in both grey and tan versions? 1988 Tiger Force Frostbite. Are there 2 or 3 variations of his eye color? Tiger Force Lifeline. Is there a variant for his goggles? Stilletto. IS there a variant of the main body? 1 piece mold vs. 2 piece mold? 1989 Alley Viper. Is there a variant to the shield handle. Round vs. flat just like Recoil? Annihilator. Is there a 1 chest stripe diagonal variant? Gnawgahyde. Is there a mustache and or boar color variant of the figure? Slaughters Armadillo. Is there a “brace bar’ part for the missile rack? 1990 Updraft. Is there a light brown vs. dark brown variant of the figure? Sonic Fighter. How many and what type of variants exist for the sonic fighter packs? 1991 Red Star. Is there a color paint application variant and head mold variant of the figure. I have a MOC and loose sample that are both near mint C9.5 at best. There is a clear noticeable difference. Sci-Fi. Any variant type for his yellow missle? Any variant type for any of the sonic fighter packs from 1991? 1993 Keel Haul. Are there 3 variants concerning the patch on his back? 1. Large patch. 2. Small patch. 3. no patch? Monster Blaster APC. Is there a color variant where the top is dark green and the bottom is light green? 1994 Mail away Joe Colton. Is there a variant of any kind for this figure? |

Best source is to go to yojoe.com. They have a section on variants and if you pick a figure it tells you all the known variants.

But your post on yojoe's forums will yield you much better results than here. The guy's who have those kinds of answers that are here are also just as active on yojoe and keep up to date with the variant sub-forum posts. |

I think many of those questions can be answered in the Ultimate Guide to G.I. Joe 1982-1984 book.

Though some can be answered by the guide. Bellamo states that there is a thick and thin thumbed straight arm grunt as asked in your first question. All of the straight arm figures have a variation like this. |

I have posted to Yo.Joe as well as the terrordrome.com forums. I just dicovered this site. The Bellomo books as well as Yo.Joe have been helpful, butmany of these as you have indicated are tougher to confirm. That is why I am looking to the collectors out there to get together and lets see if we can't resolve a few of these, not just for me, but for all collectors.
