Since April 1st is past us...I figured this would be the time to tell the greatest story E-V-E-R about a little toy called the U.S.S. Flagg Aircraft Carrier.
Last Friday I came across an ad for a U.S.S. Flagg on Craig's List. Asking price was $500. I was curious and sent an e-mail. Explained to the seller that I was in Maryland and didn't mind driving the 1 1/2-2 hours to the DC area to check out the toy, if still available. A few days went by, nothing. Then, I get an e-mail saying that the Flagg was still available and that he would send pictures a little later in the evening. The Flagg was roughly 90% complete. Something in the e-mail freaked me out though. Seller said if I was willing to drive the 90 miles to get the Flagg, I could have it. I called bullshit. I reply...no pictures needed, I know what it looks like, I can come as early as Thursday night. I leave my telephone number. I go to work, no call. I waited until until 5-6 o'clock and called...left a message. Day goes by, I call bullshit again. I called again the next day at quarter to 9. Left message...I was cut-off halfway through. My phone rings...its the seller. We exchange greetings and I ask if the Flagg is still available. He says yes and we agree upon a time to meet as well as his address. I ask the question...did you really mean that I could have the Flagg for free if I was willing to drive down? Are you sure you don't want anything for the toy? His answer, yes. He said that his father recently passed and he was moving stuff out of his mothers house. He didn't have room for the Flagg at his house, so he wanted to make sure it had a good home. He said he put a high price on it and figured if someone was willing to pay his price for it, they must have truly wanted it. So, I hang up and still in disbelief, go to my wife. I am still calling bullshit at this point. I tell her what the guy said and she really had her doubts. I tell her that his only condition was that it goes to a good home and that a child gets to play with it. My son, who is 8, turning 9 this month, hears this and is DELIGHTED! We drive down and arrive in the area at about quarter to 7. Knock on the door and the gentleman greets u. He walks us to the basement where he has out on the floor pieces of the Flagg. We start going through all the pieces and parts. I help him box up some of the loose pieces and we load them into my wife's van...my little Celica wouldn't have been the best choice. I came to learn that the Flagg has some sort of sentimental value to this man...so keeping it wasn't an option for him. He had a ton of other items...but he said he would do something with them in due time. We exchange goodbyes as we leave. A weird feeling starts to set in...my son and I have just received a U.S.S. Flagg absolutely F-R-E-E! I'm sitting here now typing this story as I am letting the first of the large pieces dry from a good cleaning. The missing items? Keel Haul and the microphone/speaker system, three deck clips and obviously the box. Other than that, everything seems to be accounted for. I told my new friend I had acquired a set of blueprints from a previous collection and the remaining three deck clips. There are some genuinely kind and generous people out there. My son is very happy and cannot wait for us to put this massive beast together. It was sitting for some time, so a cleaning was in order. I plan on investing in a new set of stickers and replacing a few cracked pieces...luckily these parts are inexpensive...so a restoration will come at a nice price! The first of many pics to come! Mind boggling that this sort of thing happens now-a-days. Great score. Treat her well.
