i would set up all tha figures with weapons and put some of them in vehicles. then i'd have huge battles all around my room. i dont remember having any aerial vehicles, so all tha combat took place on tha ground. i would use whatever i had in my room as tha environment. i would even use my sisters dollhouse from time to time. i dont remember really having any specific plots, but there was alot of dialogue tho.
it was a lil different when i had cousins or friends over to play with. we would lay out all tha figures and weapons, and sometimes tha vehicles too. then we would take turns picking. these would be huge battles, nuttin big plot-wise lol. those were tha days, waging huge battles between g.i. joe and cobra. vehicles runnin around shootin everything. explosions everywhere. now im all adulty lol. i've actually played wit my joes here and there, or just messin around, but it aint tha same lol. but collecting them is still a great feeling lol. long live tha battle between g.i. joe and cobra yo joe!

It was usually a combo of both. When I was by myself, I usually set them up to display a scene. Maybe it was an airfield. Maybe a personnel inspection. I think I even had my original Sgt. Slaughter givin' the Joes a much needed drillin'. Joes all lined up in push-up position with Sarge pointing his baton at them calling cadence.
Battles were usually two-person operation. My buddy and I would choose which side. Since his collection favored Cobra, he was usually the bad guys. I had lots of terrain to choose from. But it was usually the two fill-dirt piles in the backyard that we played on. Joes on one side. Cobra on the other. I'd fly Skystriker recon sorties over his "Cobra Island" while his Rattler would scout out my "Pit". Sometimes, they'd cross each other and a dogfight would ensue. Sometimes a ground battle would take place where we'd meet in the middle somewhere or at the duck pond for a Naval battle.

Man I remember my older brother would help me set up cool scenes usually snow or water. Would use a huge white blanket and have it start on the bed and ended on the floor. I was always using the awe and polar cat. Massive water battles were awesome with my tactical battle platform being destroyeded by the hydrofoil. Of course We loved mad Max and would use all the vehicles for a huge road warrior scene. Thunder machine was the best. Man good times.

Mine battled it out all day, every day. usually based off of one of the toons or comics... but always with a new twist!
... characters died... ... characters loved... It was all very dramatic. |

I used to do a mixture of the two. I would have bases that I would set up scenes at, I used alot of playmobile stuff that I had when I was really young, so they were always really elaborate. (Always with a hangar and a motorpool and weapons room too).
The Joe base would be in one part of the house and the Cobra base in another, and the rest of the house would be a warzone. I would have house-wide battles too. It was great... I wish I could play like I used to, I feel like if I even tried it wouldn't feel the same...

I would have voted for both if I could. My best friend and I would use our top 3 favorite each all the time and have the others as "guest stars". We very much played like it was a t.v. series and always continued playing where we would leave off. My house was one base and his house was the other. We also staged battles when Cobra would unleash a scheme to take over the base. Even my grandmothers house was a base that our Joes used. We even took cardboard boxes and made buildings for the bases. It was a blast.

When I was younger I strayed often from the cartoon story lines, and alliances! I use to just make a platoon from my more favorite characters regardless of Joe/Cobra. I'd have firefly, stormy, snake eyes, rock n roll, dusty, cobra viper, etc.. all on the same squad, and everyone else that wasn't in my squad of favorite characters were the enemy, and died horrible deaths!

kept one long running storyline.. some characters would get killed, but not really, turns out that bullet to the head just really grazed them and between play times that character was all healed up...
unless the o-ring broke, the crotch broke, and the thumbs broke, in which case, he's dead. built lots of bases, Cobra was always up to something. Amazingly enough, no matter where they built, Joe just had really good technology to find their bases, despite the fact that one of their intel experts wore a basketball jersey and an infantry leader wore a colorful football outfit with a football on a chain.. alas, those were the glory days of yesteryear. now, we just have beer, money, fast cars, and women. shame.

My brother, friends and I did both scenes and battles.
We loved building small, forts, camps, and what not... I dug little fox holes for Joes to fight in, and making all kinds of battle scenes. |
