When I wasn't in my mom's garden, I would pile up all the blankets and pillows on my bed to create mountain-like terrain. I set up the Joe's on one side and Cobra on the opposite. Fun times.

Playing with joes is one of my most favorite childhood memories.
I didn't have had any as a kid. I would go over to my friends house and we'd go to his front yard, where he'd dump out all his joe and star wars toys. In both, he had figures, playsets and vehicles. We'd each pick a figure that'd represented ourselves in our little toy world. Our toy selves would pick out signature vehicles. Everything/one else were merely side players. Then we'd play out scenarios and battles. The idea that these worlds would collide in epic out door battles was such a big thing to me as a kid that I still think about the idea today.

Me and my brothers played a bunch of different ways. Sometimes battles, sometimes just setting up, and a lot of the time was just playing out what the Joes would do in their down time.
When playing battles we didn't do Joe versus Cobra very often. Most of the time it was Joes versus the human Star Wars toys that we had. They would either be gang members trying to attack my sister's dollhouse, or they would be Russians. another thing we would do that was great fun, is that we would have convoys. We'd get out every vehicle of a certain kind (snow, desert, urban, what have you) set them up in a big row and then make our Joes jump from vehicle to vehicle fixing things. Man, I miss playing with my Joes. I need to get together with my brothers and play. |

I'd have a mix of building huge (well pretty big 6x6') cardboard buildings/ships/submarines/Castle Destros and then have battles within; or using a single figure to perform e.g. rocket launches, submarine excursions, mountaineering, race car driving, etc., etc.
So it was a mix of either battles or "layouts" (but layouts that required me to make or do something). Whatever happened I was always making something - whether a model of a vehicle or a building, and these always had to be at least vaguely working models (e.g trap doors, spring powered ejection seats, motors in vehicles and boats, subs, etc.) All good fun, just trying to get back into the motorised vehicle stuff, buildings are really too large to build and store (hide!) these days |

be sure to try this over a grassy area to lesses the chance of breaking the figure on impact

While I did get the Terrordrome at the end of my collecting days, my play took place outside or using any house hold item. The extra bed in my room was an aircraft carrier at one time. My mother's potted plant a jungle in Vietnam. When the Terrordrome did arrive, it was centered on a ping pong table which stood in for Cobra Island.

We would choose our "guys"- my cousin usually was Storm Shadow and I'd grab Snake Eyes. Then we'd pick who we were going to fight. We'd get a couple more good guys to help us and we'd choose our equipment for the mission (we got one sword, a knife, a pistol, and a main weapon like a SMG or a rifle). We'd have these missions where we attacked Cobra bases (we always pretended there was a bunch of them) and our main guys were the only ones left. At the end, there was usually a fistfight between Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow and Cobra Commander and Serpentor.
I hated playing with one of my neighbors because he would try to choose all of his stuff first, cry like a bitch and storm off saying "I'm not playing then!" if you picked one of the guys he wanted to fight or a gun he wanted to use (we used the you pick, I pick method like you use on the playground to pick teams). The dude actually didn't realize that I would totally still play if he didn't. I used to have to go and check his pockets and bags when he wasn't looking to get some of my stuff out of it. My mom eventually told his mother, and she didn't like her son being called a theif (everyone knew it and had told her) so she never let him come back. No loss. |
