My friend and I would create a huge plot involving Cobra and some world domination scheme. We would play the cobra parts out for seemingly ever and thn the Joes would finally come in and bust it up.

My brother and I would start off by picking guys.
Then we'd set up a story playing together. Then when joe would have to go off on seperate missions I'd play with my guys and he'd play with his. Then when the story would wrap up we'd play togather for the final battle. Our Joes had rivalries with each other that carried over from story to story. For example, Airborne was a rival with Firefly. We also had original characters. One was a reanimated Cobra Trooper named Morgue. |

I can remember doing both. Mostly battles, either in my basement or outside in the woods in my backyard. Once or twice, we had set up Joes and Cobra in a battle scene outside and took pictures

I was wierd in that my battles were always spontaneous and hand to hand combat. No set up. No weapons. I would lose my thier gear pretty quick so there was a lot of punching and round-house kicking going on...brawls going on everywhere.

Usually scenes, I didn't have any brothers or sisters, occasionally a cousin of mine or a neighbor kid would have a battle but they usually ended up pissing me off cause they didn't know how to play right... Tanks don't fly dammit. LOL

My brother and I shared a bedroom and whenever we decided we were going to play G.I.Joe or Star Wars, it would be turned into something that looked like a movie studio with set locations and pieces and figures more or less set up where they'd most likely first appear. I'd usually throw out a rough plot and we'd ad lib the details as we went along.
It almost ALWAYS involved just about every Joe or Star Wars figure we had, respectively, and always was a big production that would take 5x+ longer to set up and 2x longer to put away than it ever took to actually play through. I'm now wondering why I never got into the film industry. :-P

In 82 when I had only a handful of Joes, it was just battles, but as more toys came out, I had a permanant dispay set up with the 83 HQ in the center. All my Joes had their spots manning different stations. When I played, I'd pick a handful of Joes (usually the newer ones) to go on that mission. The Joes I wasn't using (usually the older ones) stayed in their spots.
I was pretty particular about who went where. A lot of placement came from who did what in the Marvel comics or who was manning that station or vehicle on the box.

Most of the time I'd take my Terrordrome down off it's display spot at the foot of my bed and stick it in the middle of my rug. Then I'd set up all my Cobra vehicles around it and load everything up with Cobra figures. Then I'd pile as many Joe figures as I could onto my Joe vehicles. Once all the vehicles were loaded to maximum capacity the carnage would start. By the end of the afternoon all the vehicles would be destroyed and with the exception of a few lucky survivors for the winning side (sometimes Joe/sometimes Cobra) all my figures would be laying "dead" on or around the TD.
If I didn't have time for a mega battle I'd just set up the TD and have a Joe strike force sneak into to take it over. Damn, I miss playing with my toys.

Both, we also used to start off by picking guys. Each side was made up of both cobra & joes. Hours of set up just to destroy it all. We would build roads and dig trenchs through all the trees and plants. We used rocks and bolders as missiles and bombs. Once the battle was over I would dig holes to bury the dead. I believe there iz still some fallen joes in that backyard . . . they will be missed. GREAT TREAD !!!!!!!!

My best friend and I had long elaborate campaigns. I had most of the basement for my toys, so clean up was rarely an issue. We would start off by choosing our teams (combining joe and cobra) and choosing the base locations in the basement. I had some bases, but we made others (top of freezer for Twins highrise, a blanket covered trampoline for an island, scrap wood fashioned into a cobra citadel). We robbed all the board games for money and had a system where we had to pay to replentish ammo after a battle. There was an entire rule set to abide by. As we got older, we incorporated a dice rolling system to eliminate hit/miss and amt of damage disputes. The good ol' days...
