IMO, From the perspective of a kid buying toys, BF 2000 seemed to be apart from the regular Joe line. As MASK or Transformers was apart. Since they stood apart in the aisle and had no antagonist (BF 2000's enemy, Cobra 2000) there was nothing compelling about them at that time.

wasn't BF2000 supposed to be against the Iron Grenadiers? I don't think that ever really got pushed, but that was the idea IIRC...

I didn't like them because there was too much white and other non-tactical colors. They never appealed to me for GI Joe figures.
Now, if they did something like that now, it could be interesting. Considering that our notion of "futuristic" back then is now either debunked as improbable, or commonplace... and what we consider being futuristic is downright wierd... It could make a cool "alternate" setting. |

I liked the figures (except maybe Maverick), with Blocker & Dodger being my favourites. I still have them all, but never had any of the vehicles.
Although on reflection, one thing I hated were the stupid gun designs they had.

The Battleforce 2000 guys to me seemed like the cannon fodder for Joes.

In my Joe-Verse, they are intended to be a super-powerful (and supposedly more economical) replacement for the GIJOE team, but they are all wiped out by COBRA in a year or so.
Not quite as one-fell-swoopy as they get wiped out in Marvel, but close enough. |

Can't speak for the others, but when I was a kid (I was 9 years old when BF2000 came out), I just felt like they didn't "belong" with GI Joe. I don't know why. Maybe it was the rather overwhelmingly bright colours they were painted in or the science-fiction-y looking odds and ends on their uniforms (although compared to the neon Eco-Warriors/Battle Corps/Mega-Marines stuff that would come out later, they look positively desaturated and realistic in retrospect). Prior to BF2000's arrival, the most odd-looking Joe in terms of colour brightness was probably Sci-Fi.
I thought Dodger and Blocker looked, cool, though, and that's because they looked more like "real" Joes than the others. |

I had most of them but recently sold them off along with my Street Fighter, Ninja Force and most post 91 Joes. Space was more of an issue with me letting it go then actually not liking them.

as a youngin' i never asked or wanted any of them and wound up with a good set of them. as an adult i have aquired all of them through purchasing other collections. it is like they are a v.d. of the joes, just cannot seem to get rid of them and everyone's got at least one. They just always seemed like a gimmick to me, even as a tyke. COBRA!

After dropping out of Joes for a few years, and I was old enough to seriously get into them, battleforce 2000 is what pulled
me back in! I think it was seeing the "newness" of them on the shelf, they popped up at an unusual time of the year. I had always really liked the manageable medium sized early vehicles, particularly the HISS and Vamp, which was great to roll around the carpet, so on a trip to TRU, I grabbed the jeepish and tannish one. The whole vehicle separation was great! Although the team was several guys short to fill everything out. I needed to complete this set! Eventually, I assembled the fortress of broken dreams. Nothing even connected to each other. It was more like an anal retentively arranged junkyard. I did enjoy the figures, as well as the vehicles, but as far as what went wrong, besides the crummy "fortress": 1) Wasnt G.I.Joe, starting in '82, already a somewhat futuristic military? 2) The vehicles felt kind of cheap. The first 2 I got were somewhat solid, and I love Vector's Pod, but in general they seemed pretty hollow and the motorcycle thing especially was like 2 things smashed together. 3) Although I liked them, the figures were kind of goofy looking, even their faces 4) They came out right after any kind of animated support could tell us how awesome they were! 4) Avalanche transformed from a tank...to a tank, with a useless wall. 5) Dee-Jay was an abomination who had to hood it anywhere he wanted to go apparently. So yeah, my relationship is love/hate. |
