Released in fall 1986 as part of the Toys 'R' Us exclusive "Special Mission: Brazil" set. This was the second version of the character released in the vintage o-ring line.
COMMUNICATIONS Code Name: DIAL-TONE File Name: Morelli, Jack S. SN: RA 428-71-3360 Primary Military Specialty: Radio Telecommunications Secondary Military Specialty: Infantry Birthplace: Eugene, Oregon Grade: E-4 Dial-Tone built his own crystal set when he was ten. By fourteen he was part of a CB net, and had his own ham station by the the time he was sixteen. Dial-Tone made all his own equipment, buying parts with quarters earned bagging groceries. He saw the army as a means to furthering his education in his chosen field and quickly found that instead of a stepping stone, it was a goal in itself. Manning a radio in the field wasn't just passing time - it was job with a purpose. "One of the scariest things that can happen to you out in the field is to lose contact with your base. That means you are ALONE. No artillery support, no air-strikes, no no medvac, no extraction, no NOTHING! The cavalry ain't comin' until the man with the radio tells 'em to." ![]() ![]() ![]() Please vote (on a scale of 1 to 10 with a 10 being the absolute best the line has to offer) on the figure's design, sculpt, paint deco, accessories and overall appeal. Yo Joe!!! **All photos are courtesy of 3DJoes.com

He was cool for back in the day more muted colors now would make the figure even better I had the set it was hard not to want another color Joe diver and leatherneck was the stand out for me that and the bubble of weapons etc .. I could Never get enough weapons when we were kids even w/having multiples of the weapons packs back then it wasn’t enough

I gave it a 2, but it is only that high because the top half of the figure is good. The red pants are so hideous - especially combined with the brown and green - that it ruins the entire figure. In my opinion, the red pants make this the ugliest figure of 1986, and one of the ugliest of the entire 82-94 run.
If the pants were green, with black books and kneepads, it would have been a nice-looking figure. |

I remember seeing the set at my local TRU in 1986 or 1987. Had it in my hands and gave it a good look-over. But I think I wanted the original figures more and put it back. Don't remember what I ended up getting that day. I definitely prefer the original deco on DT. I gave this guy a 5. I was not a big fan of the sub-team repaints back then or today, and this is one of my least favorites I guess.

one of those "i wouldnt have known about it if i didnt have the internet things" i mentioned in the thread asking about doing this ranking venture and it's outside of my collection goal.
with that in mind, i dont like this set at all. something about the colors just doesnt do it for me. dialtone is probably the better one of the group, but that's not really a compliment. it's like pieces of corn on top of a shit sandwich. his original colors were better. in fact, i would have preferred they just swapped his khaki shirt into khaki pants and if they had to have tihs ugly red that could have been his vest or belts. |

I want this line so badly in Classified. I found all these guys in a flea market box in the early 90s and something about the colors just stuck out to me.
Absolutely loved Claymore and (in my kid mind) "Desert" Leatherneck and Mainframe. |

Like most kids who had it back in the day, I bought this set to get the Claymore figure. I found the Wet-Suit and Leatherneck repaints decent enough (if blander than the originals), but the Mainframe and Dial-Tone colors were just nonsensical and aesthetically ugly.
As an adult collector, I like having this figure for its relative rarity, but the colors are still an eyesore. 5 out of 10 for me. |

I can't really be objective about most 82-87 Joes and I definitely can't with Special Mission: Brazil. My mom had the set waiting for me when I got home from school one day and for many reasons it's my favorite Joe release. All five of these figures are going to get a "10" from me, but it's more sentiment than logic.

Nostalgia is going to play a very big part in some of my votes too. But admittedly there are some figures I never had as a kid that I definitely will rate just as highly here.
Nostalgia is definitely a big factor for a lot of us for sure, especially since this is a big toy line from our childhoods.

Not as good as the original but a solid rendition. This version would probably be might third favorite version after the TF version.
