Bought this the other day sealed. I opened it and bam wtf is this? This is the European version btw. I?ve seen yellowing but not like this. The green bar frame is like an olive color and the Gatling guns are like a mustard color. I could deal with the accessories being a bit off but it pisses me off that the main piece is yellowed like this.
Is it possible to restore this with like Hydrogen peroxide and sunlight? |

Is it possible to restore this with like Hydrogen peroxide and sunlight? Ill be honest that looks too far gone to give it the old peroxide dip Don?t get me wrong I would try it but that is stained yellow not just yellowed if it was me, I?d spray paint it white & start anew or repurchase the parts

I've done the Peroxide trick with a pretty yellowed Storm Shadow and it worked wonders, so I agree it is worth a shot.

I'm on the "nothing ventured, nothing gained" camp- you have nothing to lose by trying, save the cost of the chemical.

Try direct sunlight. I bought a Skystriker a few weeks back, cleaned it up. It was still very yellow from storage in an attic. Waited for a sunny day and I threw it in the sun for a day and was very happy with the results. I have it out there again today.

This is a perfect case of this not just being about UV. It's also unfavorable environmental conditions.
Water is a heat sink and a lubricant. You do not want the plastic to heat up too much. If you don't want to use peroxide, put it in a bag with water, but the only time it's relatively safe to put dry plastic outside is when it's cooler out. You don't want to heat stress or dry the plastic out during this process. In many climates, an hour or two of full sun is enough to damage this old plastic.

Cut it off and call it battle damage.

Any idea of the cause? Like I said it was sealed though I guess it could have been opened and resealed. I just don?t understand where the yellowing came from or why it iappears mostly on one side.

Its the heat of the sunlight that causes the sped up aging usually not direct light, most likely one side of the box got more heat then the other and aged that side worse. Any kind of heat source can cause it like being kept to near a heating duct or radiator or even just in a hot attic. Most likely the part that yellowed was on the side of the box that was in direct sunlight and got hotter than the lighter parts up. Hydrogen peroxide + UV light reverse the chemical process that turned the item yellow with heat so It should work on this piece. Make sure you clean the piece really well with dish soap, water, and an old tooth brush first. The main issue you may run into is uneven de-yellowing and you may have to do it several times if you use the sun to de-yellowed. You might want to look into getting a cheap uv light strip and a clear plastic shoe storage tote from dollar tree to do the process with if the sunlight method doesn't work evenly. If all else fails prime it with a good plastic primer and give it a couple light coats of a high quality matte white spray paint and that will make it almost good as new.
