I hated the Sigma figures but I loved watching the cartoon on Fox Saturday mornings. It was just cool to have a new G.I. Joe cartoon on TV, and I didn't have cable back in my college days, so anything new was welcome. That was a fun time, and the 2003 TMNT was peak in my opinion.

Looking at the first three years, and using all media, on the Joe side alone, we had:
3 African-American men (Stalker, Doc, Roadblock) 2 females (Scarlett, Cover Girl) 1 Hispanic (Zap) 1 Jewish (Clutch) 2 Native American (Airborne, Spirit) 1 Polynesian (Torpedo) 1 Cajun (Gung Ho) That's 11 out of 32 unique "good guys" that are, how do I put it...not "white-bread" Caucasian males. Minority, yes. But I cannot think of another action figure line in the 1970s and 80s that can boast anything close to that diversity, except maybe sports (or "sports entertainment"). Are there any now? Like me getting most of the early figures from flea markets I had no idea anyone but the blatantly obvious Spirit was Native American. Didn't know Clutch was Jewish or Zap was Hispanic (the figure certainly didn't help LOL). Torpedo looked like a white dude to me. What I always found funny was that Cobra was 1000% white dudes with two female exceptions. Always laughed at that especially because some of my friends weren't particularly, "thrilled with minorities" is a nice way to put it, so they always picked the Cobras to play as. I always got Zarana and Baroness dumped on me too because "playing with girl figures makes you gay" as they'd say their parents said. |

Personally as a fan of G.I. Joe when I was a kid in the 1980s, pretty much GI Joe had a good run through all or most of the 1980s. Dunno what year figures of soldiers like a Frag Viper came out but most of the time the 1990s though had junk like the Sonic talkers which I guess they were cool but didn't like the colors and Rock and Roll's weapons were too damn big to put in his hands lol.
Plus GI Joe like Star Wars and Transformers were dying off anyway. 1990s was all about The Simpsons and Ren and Stimpy and Toybiz X Men and Batman action figures |
