2002 is a banner year for the G.I. Joe franchise, as it's the first time in 20 years that we see a significant design change. The O-rings are still around this year, but a new body sculpt type was introduced with the Joe vs. Cobra line... the precursor to the Modern Era sculpts we see a lot moving forward. Personally, I enjoyed these new sculpts more than the O-rings. However, I will say that some of the sculpts left much to be desired. It was similar to the 90s Kenner Power of the Force figures, which saw the likes of Han and Luke look like they were competing in the World's Strongest Man contest. Some of the Joe vs. Cobra sculpts are similar, but even worse... they all appear to have skipped leg day.
For this Poll, we're dealing strictly with O-rings, as we take a look at the final wave of the Real American Hero Collection and their single vehicle driver. I chose to vote for Shipwreck, as I like the Navy SEAL look, compared to the dungarees of the original, and he also came with some nice accessories. I'm beginning to have a new appreciation for the figures of this era, but I still don't love any of them. The attempts to make new characters that are 90% repainted from old molds with new heads on top (Sideswipe, Sidetrack, and the Lifelife who's a different character than the original Lifeline) are totally forgettable. As is the new Dusty who's a kitbash of Dusty and Dial Tone parts and looks way more like Dial Tone.
Shipwreck v4 is fine, except is too similar to v2 but with those stupid paints wipes that just make him look dirty. And we already had a better repaint of that mold with the v3 in 1998 anyway. Tomax and Xamot, nearly identical to the originals. What's the point? I voted Serpentor. The darker colors look good on him. |

Dusty (v5) - One of the worst figures Hasbro ever released. The parts don't fit. Cannot move his head. Straight repaint of either figure would've been better. But also, Hasbro had waaaay too many molds around to give us this. Guess it was cheaper than "dusting off" something not recently used.
Lifeline (v5) - Why'd they bother with a new head? Also, a helmet would've been nice. Serpentor (v2) - Fine, but kinda boring. Shipwreck (v4) - Barely repaint of the 1994 one. Odd choice. Shock Viper (v1) - Much praised. Never owned one, because few will part with them and when they did, not cheap. Sideswipe (v1) - Not a name I'd want for a medic. A helmet would've been nice. Sidetrack (v2) - Not Side Track. Different guy. Seriously, Hasbro gave no fudges. Honestly the Battle Corps Stalker body isn't that good and it shows here more than it did in 1994. A helmet would've been...yeah. Tomax (v2) - Another barely repaint. Does give you soft handed Twins, but the pairs are notorious for yellowing. Xamot (v2) - Same. |

Just noticed that Dusty has actually not had very many figures. More than some but less than I'd have expected, and many of them don't look ready for the desert either.

i hate that dusty. i hate that we got endless repaints of stretcher's body after this. side track is a junk mold of a junk stalker figure (head is the only thing worth anything)
i went with xamot because he's the twin with a scar, but my vote is for both of them if i could. reason: safer to play with this version of them without worry of breaking them. same for serpentor. |
