Just curious if the football William Perry aka the Fridge if he was even a popular NFL player to have a GI Joe action figure made of him?

Yeah, he was pretty popular during the 1985 Bears Super Bowl run. He was everywhere on television. He was more popular than Sgt. Slaughter, at that point in time.

Absolutely he was super popular. He was also featured heavily during WrestleMania 2 in the battle royal with Andre and Big John Studd. Around 1985-86 he was definitely among the most likeable and popular athletes in the world.

That 1985 Bears team was probably the most popular Sports team in America at that time. They were so good, you could not have respect for them. Even Packer fans (who hate the Bears) could respect that team.
And they were cocky as can be. They are the only team to put out a hit single before the Superbowl saying they were going to win. Just listen to the "Superbowl Shuffle." They had celebrities on that team. You had Samurai Mike Singletary, the hardest hitting middle linebacker in the league. You had Jim McMahon who was their quarterback. He had a fight going on with the commissioner and the league that year for not wearing league sanctioned items on his uniform. You had Walter Payton on that team who was one of the greatest running backs of all time, and was just a hard working awesome dude (RIP!!!). And then you had the Fridge which was one of the first short stocky 300+# football players that was just unblockable at times on defense. He also was given the ball on offense in short yardage situations, which was unheard of at the time. He was given the nickname the Fridge in training camp and his celebrity skyrocketed from there. I strongly suggest you watch the 1986 Superbowl to see how dominant they were. So yes, he was that big in the mid 80's!!!

If not for Hogan and his immense popularity both Studd and Bundy might have been WWF champion.

Hogan stole the spotlight back in the day w/his showmanship ?literal peacock? was a big fan of hogan back in that day .. he made me want to work out and then seeing ultimate warrior for the first time i knew i wanted to put in some work .. He deserved to be made a joe more than slaughter did and i love slaughter . I remember ordering multiple slaughters/fridge?s/and the surfboard w/the outrigger and sail back in the day like 3-4 of the guys and i think i had 6 of the surfboard ,my mom pitching a shit about writing all of those checks for such small amounts .. simpler times also when i enjoyed watching football/wrestling now its showboating and storytelling cant stand either anymore ..

He was so popular they let him score a td in the super bowl instead of Walter Payton.
I'm not even a bears fan, but that was wack. |
