That shit was crazy. I've never watched a football game in my life. I couldn't name 5 NFL teams, but I can still name at least 5 members of the '85 Bears. They were everywhere.

But as a kid I recall what made the Fridge so cool was he was a real person made into a figure.

The Pats main goal during that game was to stop Walter. The D was set up to stop him, that's why he didn't score. The Bears tried many times to have Walter score, but the Pats wouldn't let him. That said, Walter not scoring was the only disappointment I had after that game. I was so happy that he finally won a Superbowl though!!!

Speaking of Payton, I have made a jersey life rule:
You should only wear 3 jerseys in your whole life. 1. Your own when you are playing. 2. Your son's or your daughter's jersey. 3. Walter Payton.

Hell yeah, they were big. Vividly remember watching that Super Bowl in early '86!
And who could forget this gem! No suprise we got The Fridge a year later in 1987! Hope we can one day get The Fridge in Classified. He actually got a fair amount of nomination votes this last March Madness tournament (got 15 votes, good for 42nd place for Joes and 83rd place overall in 2024).

He was on an episode of The A-Team, too. Season 4, IIRC.

You are correct! Season 4, Episode 21! Aired on 03/25/86 and was probably filmed immediately after they had won the SB.

I am all for the fridge getting remade for classified he was cool when we were kids and i wouldnt mind having him now. I really liked his outfit especially the booys they just looked like ass kicking boots , too bad hasbros starting line up didnt take off we could have had tons of football player sized figures and then kit bashed or customized our own fridge if he never makes it to classified ..

Do not be sad about that. Good times are on the way.
My daughter’s name is Payton. My son’s name is Halas. Yes, the Fridge was a national sensation. He had his own cheerleaders at one point. I am certain he led all defensive linemen in rushing tackles. I met him at O?Hare and got his autograph. A true gentleman. |

That 1985 Bears team was probably the most popular Sports team in America at that time. They were so good, you could not have respect for them. Even Packer fans (who hate the Bears) could respect that team.
And they were cocky as can be. They are the only team to put out a hit single before the Superbowl saying they were going to win. Just listen to the "Superbowl Shuffle." They had celebrities on that team. You had Samurai Mike Singletary, the hardest hitting middle linebacker in the league. You had Jim McMahon who was their quarterback. He had a fight going on with the commissioner and the league that year for not wearing league sanctioned items on his uniform. You had Walter Payton on that team who was one of the greatest running backs of all time, and was just a hard working awesome dude (RIP!!!). And then you had the Fridge which was one of the first short stocky 300+# football players that was just unblockable at times on defense. He also was given the ball on offense in short yardage situations, which was unheard of at the time. He was given the nickname the Fridge in training camp and his celebrity skyrocketed from there. I strongly suggest you watch the 1986 Superbowl to see how dominant they were. So yes, he was that big in the mid 80's!!! |
