I was in kindergarten and dude my mom started dating got me GI Joe Headquarters. Talk about an introduction and beginning with a bang lol. My guess, he got some too! Mom took one for the team on that one. I recall Barbecue because of the colours but honestly do not recall my very first figure(s). Hard for me to pick/recall a figure that would outdo the Headquarters and that is what stands out the most. However, I do recall Flash. A favourite pick up would be the twins.
Thanks Paul (also introduced me to hockey); and thanks mom! |

MMS with Hawk. I was REALLY young, maybe just turning four? I know it was for a birthday, I think from my grandma... Unfortunately, I lost it at some point before I even really got into GI Joes, which is too bad. I might have traded it or given it to my friend down the street, who had all the original '82 stuff, as I was still mainly into SW and LEGO at the time.
Later I got the HISS and a Cobra soldier, from my uncle at a family Christmas. I kept that one, but it was really in '85 that I got really into the Joes in a big way. I remember picking up Dusty (and my bro got Spirit) and that's the figure that really started it for me! (And I wish I had kept the MMS even then.)

I'm an old dog.
My first Joe was the mercury astronaut with space capsule. Must have been 68 or 69. I remember the dog we had tore the space suit to shreds and the capsule got sold off at a garage sale. After that, it was an Adventure Team Air Adventurer. I remember when ARAH was announced it would be coming out from an article in Time Magazine. |

I had Flash.
I distinctly remember being amazed that his gun could plug into his backpack and he had a removable helmet. He didn't last long though. I broke the rubber band and he got thrown out. I was young. I can't remember if he was a straight arm or not. |

I was 8-years-old in 1982 when I got the VAMP with straight-arm Clutch and was instantly hooked. Never looked back after that.

Shit, lost my reply when adding the video, I guess. My first Joe was Hawk & the MMS. I remember a couple of neighborhood kids had a few of the 82 Joes, but I didn't know their names--one kid had their filecards in his night table drawer, but all I noticed was their specialties--so I just asked for a "GI Joe" for either my birthday or Christmas. My mom found me Hawk, and probably thought I'd especially dig it because he was blonde like me, the fact it wasn't just a figure, and because of the big-ass missles. It's crazy how well parents know their kids.

well, let's see...
i remember asking my mom to get me the figure/guy "GI Joe". She returned from the store with several figs and explained that no one was called "GI Joe", its just the team name. I recall owning all of the single carded figs except Scarlett, and maybe Breaker. I think i recall acquiring SE, RnR, Zap and Stalker at later dates. if that's correct, the assortment i was initially presented with included at least two if not all three of the remaining guys - flash, short-fuze and grunt. Flash has always been my favorite non-SE 82 joe. Lot of love for the 82 guys, even if they are a bit boring and/or drab in the opinion of some. |

My memory has gotten fuzzy with time. But I think my first was Breaker with straight arms. And I broke his left arm, I don't remember how though. I was so happy that a year later I was able to get the swivel arm version.
