Thanks guys, that's good to know. I'm pretty sure I never took those gliders outside to throw them since we had an outside dog back then who would catch, take off with and tear up anything thrown. RIP Nerf boomerang, you were a whole 15 seconds of fun.

Jeez Cap, that was almost like reading my own story, right down to the bit about thinking allowances were only for TV kids, although my own brother was around 3 in '87. I'll never forget asking my mom what was cooking, only for her to get an odd look on her face, rush to the oven, open it up, only to find a once nice Falcon figure that now looked like corporate art.
Anyway, great find, make sure you put up a needed parts list, I *may* have a part or two. That Viper pilot is looking fresh AF- slightly jealous Did you also think that kids going off to summer camp was a fairy tale too? Lol. Poor Falcon, man that really sucks. While I do love reading about other people's positive childhood experiences with GI Joe back then , I find it hard to relate to a lot of it. I guess I was lucky to get what I did considering the circumstances. The '87 run was the last figures I had and didn't buy anything new GI Joe until 2013 or '14 for my nephew. As for missing parts, I'm pretty sure I have Zarana's weapon in with some random stuff and possibly a helmet for Clutch. I need to look through some more stuff to be sure. I had all the accessories memorized as a kid, but have no clue about it now. One thing I do know is, that I for sure do not have a leg for Rock n Roll, lol.

Awesome story, love hearing stuff like this! (Wish I had one, but I don't think I have anything left from my childhood... I was lucky to find some random Lego with which I was able to reassemble a couple cherished Classic Space and Castle sets with the help of Bricklink).
Just a bit of advice, though. First and foremost - DID NO ONE ELSE NOTICE THAT IS NOT A COBRA OFFICER, but a VIPER PILOT?! With a very, very nice sigil to boot. That is at LEAST $200, maybe more (I am out of date on current prices). I would be very, very careful with that one - do not touch the silver at all! And... I don't know how old your kid is, but... well, I'm just going to come out and say it. Giving that to a kid to play with would be a tragedy. I know it sounds "wrong" somehow, because these are toys and "meant to be played with", etc. etc. I'm just saying that figure in particular, in that condition, is extremely rare and the sigil, at least, would almost certainly be destroyed, even by the most careful child (or adult, even). So that would be a big shame! Honestly, given that so many of these are original straight-arms... Well, same thing, so a somewhat lesser degree as these aren't quite as rare or valuable... but the thumbs especially are extremely brittle (you can already see Zap has at least one broken, probably due to his stupidly designed bazooka), and frankly all of these are pretty delicate these days. That plastic was great in its day (mostly) but over the years it gets brittle and easily broken. And the paint on all of these is really quite good for the most part. All I am saying is that you might regret it, lol. Trust me, I know where you are coming from - I gave my young daughter a vintage Soundwave to "play" with under supervision! And she still managed to break it in no time flat. These toys were "meant to be played with" but not after 30-40 years of plastic degradation! I would just buy him some Classified figures and "share" these with him on the shelf, if I were you. EDIT: Looks like I took too long with this post, but as you can see I wasn't kidding! Knowing is half the battle... That's pretty cool you managed to rebuild your old lego sets. I have a old lego space set somewhere if you need it. It wasn't originally mine and I have no attachment to it so it needs to go to someone who appreciates that kind of stuff. Thanks for the advice. My son is 11 and has been collecting and playing with the modern era style figures, along with new and vintage vehicles for a few years now. I understand the concern with the vintage stuff and it's always nice to know what they can be worth. However, he's never been the typical kid with any of his stuff and very particular to keep everything in one piece. He's only got a few O-rings we've found here and there and he keeps them separate from the rest to pretty much only look at on occasion. Sgt Slaughter himself gave him a Slaughter's Marauders O-ring a couple years back that is probably the most special to him thing he has. I'm not sure if these childhood O-rings will ever come close to that experience. lol. When he does get these, I highly doubt he'll ever be playing with them as he already knows of how delicate this old stuff can be. I'm proud to say he's hasn't lost or broken any of his GI Joe toys as of yet, modern or vintage. If an accident eventually occurs, while it might be disappointing, it's not the end of the world either. After all, I did believe these were totally destroyed or lost long ago so this is a really blessing of sorts that came about at probably the perfect point in time to be passed down. As far as Classified series figures goes, he's got a few given to him from a friend or bought on clearance. While he does like them, I can't say he's that interested in them if that makes sense. I think part of it's that GI Joe is just not the same without the vehicles, playsets etc. that the smaller figures can more easily provide. Anyways, thank you for the reply, I really enjoyed reading your post.

Seriously? That's amazing! I wonder how many of those he's held onto over the years, and if so, was it just for occasions like this?

Yes, I would love to know the story behind that as well. Was it a convention visit or did you reach out to the Sarge? Please tell us the story.

That's a terrific find! (and a shitty story of childhood...lol) My childhood was on the poor side too, but I still managed to end up with some cool things. When I first got back into toy collecting as an adult, I had a sorta recurring dream (happened like 2 or 3 times) of finding my old childhood Joes. In one dream, I found them hanging on the pegs in a Kmart or something. The closest I came in the waking world was finding out my little bro had hung onto my Super Powers toys all these years. Point is, your find is a kinda dream come true.
This is actually a timely read because I've been spending time with my own brother going through our adult toy collections, preparing to sell a bunch of it. Just chatting while going through gobs of modern-era toys, we both realized we've noticed that the toys themselves have lost a lot of the ol' magic, and a lot of adult toy collectors seem to have forgotten the "toy" part of this shit, as we've increasingly forced our adult selves into our collecting. It's great to come across something like this as a reminder how all this began, and why we fell in love with it enough to still be dicking around with it 30+ years later.

It was at a convention a couple of years ago. My son wanted to do the pic and autograph deal they had pretty much the first thing walking through the door that day. Sarge talked with him quite a bit then, asked where he was from, about school and stuff like that. My son brought up Sarge fighting all the BATS at some point so they talked about the cartoon for a good while. We could've left after that and he would still have been very happy, but we browsed the show for several hours, went to eat, came back and stayed a while more. Before we left that day, he asked if he could go tell Sgt. Slaughter bye. We told him he could as long as he wasn't busy with other people. Fortunately he wasn't at that moment, so they talked some more and took a few more pics. Then Sarge tells him to hold up a minute that he's got something for him, then goes back around the table and brings out the figure. Sarge asked him "Do you have one of these guys?" and before he has time to finish the question, my son yells out "Slaughter's Marauders Sgt. Slaughter!" followed by an insane amount of wows and thank you. Sarge kind of laughed and said something like "Yeah that's right, it's Slaughter's Marauders". I think it caught him off guard a kid even today immediately knew what version of him it was. My son fell asleep later clutching that figure on the drive home. It was such a great experience.

Funny you mentioned your K-mart dreams. While I don't think I've had any like that, it reminded me of how K-mart was a very important part of my Joe world back then. My mom had to use the layaway at K-mart for most Christmases and such. The layaway department was in the back left hand part of the store near the crafting supplies. When a new wave of Joes would come in at K-mart, I'd maybe have saved enough for just a couple, so I made my own personal GI Joe figure layaway department in the crafting supplies for the next figure I wanted to buy that I didn't have the money for at the time. They had this aisle with nothing but these cubby hole shelves each full of various colors of yarn. Yarn crafts were very popular back then I guess. I picked out which ever color yarn on the bottom row that was the ugliest to me and would hide the one figure in that cubby hole behind the yarn. Once I got enough money, I'd go back there and get the figure out and sometimes replace it with another figure I didn't have money for and wanted next. This went on for several years. My mom thought it was hilarious, but it was the only way I could figure out how to get the ones I wanted back then and it worked. Sometimes if I knew she was going to town and I wasn't, I'd give her the money and tell her to look behind the baby shit green yarn on the bottom row. If I happened to get the same figure elsewhere or as a gift or something that was currently in my personal joe layaway, then the next time I was in K-mart I'd get that one out and put it back on the peg and sometimes swap it out with a different one. Anyway, that's my K-mart GI Joe story. R.I.P. K-mart along with Gibson's, OTASCO, Ben Franklin, Woolsworth and Service Merchandise stores. Also Sears Wishbook and JC Penny's Christmas catalogs. All were a big part of the whole GI Joe experience growing up.
