I wanted to reach out to the Joe community to get some advice on my collection. I currently collect vintage Joe, Transformers, Thundercats, & He-Man. Since I have a larger closet to display my collection in, I set limits on what years/figures. For example, for Transformers I only collect 1984-1987.
For GI Joe, I tried to set a limit of collecting 1982-1990, but I don't collect any of the sub-lines like Night Force, Tiger Force, etc. My issue is I am very close to finishing my collecting, and everything I have is displayed, but what I have left is very expensive and I am running out of steam. For Joe Figs, I still need figures like Starduster, Rumbler, Skystriker, Claymore, and Cold Front and these figures are very $$$ to get complete. I'm not sure if I should just not worry about getting these, pay out the $$$ for them, of try to bide my time and find them for less. |

I cannot give any advice. I do not know what your finances are or how satisfying it will be to you personally to see this collection complete. I would pay the money to acquire the figures, but I am also hopelessly addicted to this type of stuff and have a degree of O.C.D. that would bother me knowing that my collection was incomplete.

I've pretty much switched my focus to casually picking up things I like from other lines, and opportunistically grabbing other stuff when I see a deal- I just got HT's pistol the other day, which means I practically have him off of my list. So yeah, long game for sure. I couldn't imagine just giving up, but I also don't see the need to bite the bullet and just buy the first overpriced Ninja Viper I see, either. On the one hand, it's a bit frustrating being so close, only to have the pace slow to a crawl, but on the other, I'm saving a ton each month by waiting and being nearly done... I was dropping $500-1000 a month somewhere during the height of my collection building.

i've been collecting 87-91+. i tend to get what i can that's available and complete the figure that way. i am not nearly as serious as collecting this anymore because the prices for them are just so ridiculous now.
i just accept that i'll never get an original of like hard top's microphone and pistol and i am going without; just because when i die, i dont want the mess of a repro thing in my collection on someone else to figure out. really, it's on my wife to figure out and i have pretty good notes on what i have for gijoes in this collection - but she ultimately doesnt care and isnt going to put something in water to see if it floats (which i think in of itself is a junk way of figuring out if it's fake or not so it would be preposterous for me to put that on her to do). i dont display anything until it's complete. so if it doesnt have all it's accessories or filecard then the figure doesnt get out of the box. so my hardtop and payload are in the box because their filecards are 50 bucks each. a couple years back i was more serious about chasing all of this down but i've essentially been priced out of collecting it. so i have what i have. im not necessarily "finished", because a few months back i got a busted crotch nightforce lightfoot for 5 bucks (and i needed the figure, so now i only need his crotch and i think his hose). |

My advice is not to spend money on something just because it's a hole in your collection; if you really want it, that's one thing, but don't feel obligated. I spent years purchasing stuff out of obligation, and in hindsight I shouldn't have, as it led me down a pretty deep rabbit hole I'm now trying to climb out of. But it sounds like you're also setting tighter boundaries for yourself than I was.
I'd suggest "wait" rather than "pay lots of $$$ now". It's always possible a better opportunity may come along, and having something to chase after may be more gratifying than having it all but nothing left to go after. Please, there may be kids reading this.

when i was collecting the 25th anniversary joes, it didn't bother me that i didn't have all the vehicle drivers, or doc (he was mail order or something), but it bothered the hell out of me that i didn't have dial tone or footloose, who were made by the joe collector club i think, and i ended up paying like 150-200 each for those guys.
i don't have any totally complete collections, but i do get what i really want, even if is pricey sometimes. luckily most things i want are the standard things, not too pricey. but if i was only a few figs away from a complete 80s joe run, hell i'd go for it. again, your finances and how much you really want it are up to you. good luck! |

To quote Kenobi, this is a dangerous time for you. You'll either give up out of exhaustion, frustration and credit card debt, and sell everything because you'll never be happy with a partial collection, or you'll go balls-out and do anything or pay any amount to complete what you need.
Or you can just revise your collecting, look at what you have, and keep the few that really hit you in the feels. Then let go of other things you don't really have an attachment to, and just bought because "Well, I have Hordak and Leech, which I love, so I might as well buy Mosquitor, Grizzlor and the rest, or the team isn't complete". Give your mental health a break, free up some space, and make a little cabbage in the process. We really are a mentally ill bunch lol... |

I can tell you how I would handle such a scenario (bide my time and enjoy the incredibly cool collection I've built while filling in the few missing pieces in a way that is financially reasonable, hunting for deals and occasionally splurging), but the best advice I can offer to anyone engaging in a luxury hobby like toy collecting is this: never do anything that isn't FUN for you.

Definitely. And don't let other Collector's OCD rain on your parade: "You bought Zuckuss but not 4-LOM? You bought Slice but not Dice? You don't collect Pops? What? Your Star Wars collection stops with the Droids cartoon?"
Shit, I've even done it on Facebook, gatekeeping new collectors that have 80 Classifieds but not one vintage o-ring. And I'm always fighting the "You don't play with them? These won't be worth anything in the box in a few years!" |
