Like everyone before me said (if I understood right) sell everything and start breeding sheep.

I wanted to reach out to the Joe community to get some advice on my collection. I currently collect vintage Joe, Transformers, Thundercats, & He-Man. Since I have a larger closet to display my collection in, I set limits on what years/figures. For example, for Transformers I only collect 1984-1987.
For GI Joe, I tried to set a limit of collecting 1982-1990, but I don't collect any of the sub-lines like Night Force, Tiger Force, etc. My issue is I am very close to finishing my collecting, and everything I have is displayed, but what I have left is very expensive and I am running out of steam. For Joe Figs, I still need figures like Starduster, Rumbler, Skystriker, Claymore, and Cold Front and these figures are very $$$ to get complete. I'm not sure if I should just not worry about getting these, pay out the $$$ for them, of try to bide my time and find them for less. |

If it doesn’t bother you don’t chase those expensive figures. If it does, maybe sell ooff one of the other collections like thunder cats or He-man. Or transformers even. Like Marie kondo make sure what you have brings you joy. If not, delete.

I just started recently (couple of years back) collecting, and had some issues and I am probably an outlier here as what I'm trying to get is not really very expensive (new sculpt era figures and some vehicles), but I set limits nonetheless. I started by telling myself I don't want to be a completist, because I know that will be very hard to do and I need to be flexible. Nonetheless, *I am* trying to get a couple of hard-to-find and expensive stuff. So, I'm playing the wait-and-see game. I have made a list of what I want (which is, slowly-ever-growing), and every now and then run a search on ebay for those things, or visit not-so-local vintage toy stores to monitor prices, and when I see something good I grab it.
One example: I wanted the 2004 BAT APC. I didn't care for the figures, but at least needed the vehicle complete. On ebay, it doesn't go for less than a $120, which I can spend, but I don't want to. 2 weeks ago I was lucky enough to find it complete, with one of the BATs on a vintage toy store for $70. I was super happy. Sometimes just finding what you want and at a price you are happy to pay is more satisfying than just getting it. Not sure if this is advice, just sharing my experience, hope it helps! |

yeah I managed to eventually get all those guys without paying TOO terribly much... the likes of Create-a-Cobra, too. If you're patient, sometimes you can get lucky! I'd say do 'save search' for these guys on ebay. Then you can check, or get alerts, when new ones are listed. Sometimes a seller lists one at auction and it's under-valued and you can jump on it.
.... of course, NOW I'm trying to find even HARDER-to-find things like a few of the modern era or club or con exclusives that I'd skipped. That's much harder than the pricey vintage guys, and I dont' have much hope on that front! |

I'm not sure if I should just not worry about getting these, pay out the $$$ for them, of try to bide my time and find them for less. - 1982-1990 - No repaints from sublines (NF, TF) May I suggest a couple more limits? - No Mail-Away figs (Starduster no longer needed, and you could sell any you have if you want) - No store Exclusives (Claymore off your list) - Drivers don't have to be complete (don't worry about accessories for Cold Front, Skystriker, and Rumbler) I find that adding limits/fences/borders to my collecting allows me to Complete my collection on my own terms. It is absolutely needed when you REALLY want that "complete" status, but you also have more important financial obligations (spouse, kids, etc.). |

My main goal as a collector is the destruction of the toy company Super 7, which a few fiendishly clever sleuths here deduced was my motivation for joining the board. But I'm also trying to collect a complete set of the 82-94 ARAH line. I have about 200.
1) You wisely are ignoring the dogshit sub-lines and even entire years of the line, so you can live without Hardtop's mic or whatever 2) eBay prices are fake. They're just completely made up. Follow a few auctions to see what these things actually move for. Use the MAKE OFFER button 3) There's a non-zero chance they re-release something approximating Starduster or that orange Tripwire one day. That '84 Storm Shadow they remade saved me 30 bucks. Mattel remade Wonder Bread He-Man, anything is possible, even if Hasbro is currently borderline openly hostile to o-ring fans |
