Question for those that have experience storing old Joes in colder climates: have you experienced any damage to the plastic, after storing them in the cold?
I need to keep some of my vehicles in the Garage for a while over winter. It is attached and between units so there is some insulation - but the temperature dips in the colder months. I don?t think it ever gets SUPER cold in there, but certainly around the freezing point in the colder nights. When I was young, we kept them in the cold sheds all the time and they were fine by spring. But, the plastic was a lot younger back then too. I?m a bit worried about the older plastic not holding up to the cold as easily |

Never had an issue, and I live in the Sierra Nevadas. It gets as high as 110 in the summers and I've seen it as low as 9 in the winter here. O-rings deteriorate rapidly here though.

I've stored Joe's in outside storage units for several years in OH & MN, only things I noticed were discoloring of VvV figures, some o-rings broke on figures too but the plastic was fine.

Expect irreversible yellowing. That is my experience. I wouldn't do it. There is also the risk of cracks from shrinkage, which I've also seen at this age of plastic.
Whatever else you store in your garage can also have a damaging vapor effect as well, especially any planting materials or fertilizers.

Personally, I would be concerned with repeated heat and cold having an effect on making old plastic brittle. Humidity may also factor into that equation as well. Sataninjaku hasn't had issues though, and he lives in an environment that hits both extremes, so everything may also be ok. Who knows? I would err on the side of caution though, just my two cents. One season probably wouldn't be as bad as being stored for years though.
BTW Satan, you ever see any silent types with pet wolves around the cabins in your neck of the woods?

Thanks for all the input.
On the typical winter night, it can dip down to -20 here (That's -4 Fahrenheit for you, down south). Sometimes colder. But, I don't think it gets that cold in the garage. Maybe on the cold nights it will get to just under freezing, but usually it's warm enough in there to melt snow. That said, I think I might play it safe and bring the collection into the basement for the winter. |
