I'm working on an ARAH Torpedo repaint right now.
Once I had a base coat down over the parts, I saw the bad sculpting on the eyes hidden Hasbro's painted eyes. The rest of the head is fantastic, and far more complex than I ever realized. For example, the edge of the divemask actually comes out from underneath the scuba mask. Has anyone ever noticed how horribly sculpted the eyes on it really were? They looked like two huge eggs popping out of the skull, and they weren't even level. Like Marty Feldman and Alfred E. Newman had a kid. Unlevel bug eyes were nothing new in '83, as they were also seen on the Grunt/Zap/Grand Slam head, and the Grunt/Torpedo heads appear to be sculpted by the same person (Ron Rudat?). Keep in mind, in '83 there was no clear plastic or removable lens to the scuba mask. It was up to the kid to imagine it was there, like the windshield on the VAMP. But after looking at it up close and repainting it, I think the intent was to somehow indicate that there was a visual distortion because the eyes were supposed to be behind the lens of the scuba mask. Any thoughts? |

So only paint, not sculpt, divides the upper and lower eyelids? That would explain why all those early faces looked so heavy lidded,

I mean, yeah, Torpedo's always had a sleepy-looking face with droopy eyes. I think in 1983 that even if you had a great-looking sculpt in the 2-up, the technology just wasn't there to carry all the detail down to the final scaling.

Different techniques of creating action figures with masks? How does he compare to Storm Shadow versus the Cobra Trooper?
He and SS are also Asian/Pacific. https://christophegaron.com/articles...omy-explained/ Also, if you take the mustache off Gung-Ho, does his face look like Grunt/Zap/GS? |

i dont like torpedo's head. one major reason is it took me 30 years to figure out that was a diving mask on his face. i thought it was a hose to a balacava. like beachhead's mask with a hose on it but sculpted in 1983.
i dont think it was intended to look like it was behind a diving mask. lift ticket's head sculpt being a gigantic turd being a good example of figures just not having good head sculpts. |

To be fair, your face does get smushed and distorted when you put on a wet suit hood.

Here's an image of the original head, with its thick "T" shaped painted eye. Once that is painted over, you can see the actual sculpting better. There are eyelids, but they're in a very "sleepy" position. |

I wonder if the eyes were sculpted first, then the mask around it. Or, was the mask sculpted first shoeboxing the workable area? My hunch is that something about the technique is what lead to the eyes being so bad. It's probably not an accident that Torpedo and Snow Job had solid/painted visors. |

I haven't seen a Storm Shadow or Gung Ho with the Hasbro eyes covered, so I'm not sure how they'd compare. At a glance, though, Storm Shadow's eyes look pretty good. |
