He looked at Destro's exposed chest and said, "Hold my beer."
[Card art] Score: 3 Is he sneaking-up on someone with that thing? [Figure sculpt + colors] Score: 3 Goofy and outlandish. [Weapons + accessories] Score: 3 Was never a fan of those little hoses. The pistol is OK. [Memories from your youth] I preferred Destro, who had already filled a similar role in the Sunbow series. Last edited by AWOL; 10-28-2023 at 03:12 PM.. |

Card art: Classic, creepy looking professor, obviously a bad guy. Figure sculpt + colours: The bare chest/belly as well as the bare arms don't fit his specialty and role, IMO. The purple pants never bothered me. Nice monocle. Ever since I saw Austin Powers he reminds me of Dr. Evil, hehehe. Weapons + accessories: I love that cape, it gave him a lot more prestige. Pistol is not that good, the brainwave scanner is a bit strange, but fits the character. Memories from your youth: My Dr. Mindbender belonged to my older brother at first, but he didn't play with his Joes so I got his stuff when I was seven years old. I wasn't familiar with his role in the cartoon so I thought he was a Dreadnok because of the bare chest and big mustache. And I saw him sitting on the Dreadnok Cycle in a Dutch promo leaflet. I didn't use him a lot on the direct battlefield, but he played his part in the supporting ranks. He's not among my favorite figures, but he definitely belongs in the collection. |

card art - It's fine. Even by his time it was hard to do much new with art poses. 7/10
figure sculpt + colours - head sculpt couldn't been better in some ways, the Monocle especially. The classic barely detailed ears. But tech at the time, maybe. And it's probably too big. Body sculpt is good, but head brings it down a point. 6/10 weapons + accessories - It's a cattle prod, since Mindy was originally designed by Hasbro to be a torturer. Pistol is a bit larger just there. But he can hold it and it's better than no gun. Odd it's color is different from his other accessories. Cape is cool, I had the softer earlier cape. A friend had the later felt style cape. 7/10 memories from your youth - Not that much considering when I got him I had few Cobra characters, he was more of a stay at HQ character. His cape prevented use in vehicles with back pegs (i wasn't going to take it off). But I was more war stories than crazy scheme stories. As such Mindbender got little play wear. Even his weirdness factor was overshadowed by the 1987 Cobra additions. |

I give him a 3.
He was part of the trend with Cobra that saw them move away from any military semblance and straight into comic book villain, which I hated. His sculpt was great, but the design was too outlandish for me. And his gear was questionable. As a kid I couldn't really figure out what the heck it was supposed to be, basically a box and a stick. Later when I found out it was an electric prod used for torture, well let's just say it made me question the mental and spiritual well being of whoever designed that as a toy for kids... |
