1984 was a banner year for the G.I. Joe brand. Some of the best figures in the line were released that year, as well as some of the best vehicles. Iconic toys such as the Rattler, CLAW, ASP, WHALE, Moccasin, SHARC, and Sky Hawk were hitting the stores and finding their way into the hands of kids everywhere.
Part 1 of this poll will be the tough one, as you have to sift through a rather large collection of great toys to pick just one to vote on. It's easier to choose if you actually had the toys in question, so for me, it comes down to the Rattler and the WHALE. As cool as the Rattler was, the WHALE was just a huge, fantastic beast of a toy and I have to give the nod to Cutter's ride. It could hold a ton more figures than the Rattler, plus it comes with two single-manned vehicles! About the only bad thing you can say about the WHALE is that it has a lot of easily broken, or lost, parts making it nearly impossible, in the present day, to find a 100% complete one. There's several really good ones to choose from. If I was to pick from something I actually had back then, it would be the Rattler with Moccasin a close second

Man, I have said it for years, but the Killer WHALE was/is the Millennium Falcon of the GIJoe toyline! It was a vehicle & playset all wrapped into one. It was both a water and land vehicle, had a type of cockpit for the pilot & co-pilot, not only had the two gunner's turrets, but also the main cannons and missile launchers.
Then there's all the little extra goodies like the troop hold, mini-bike, depth charges, and the recon sled. Just an amazing toy all around! Jason |

Yes, WHALE all the way. That's a good analogy. The WHALE does all the things--it moves around and has playset features to allow many figures on it in many positions. The sled and depth charges and missiles are all different kinds of removable interactable parts that lend themselves to different play patterns, unlike the removable bits on the air vehicles. It's probably the single best vehicle in the entire line. I mean, it really floats! You take it into the pool!

WHALE is cool, but kinda overrated in my opinion. Rattler is great, but Water Mocassin takes the cake for me. Absolutely stellar, and it fits into my vision for Cobra and the 'Noks.

Water Moccasin is excellent.
I could see support for the Stinger since it complements the HISS so well and gives Cobra another vehicle vs. the surplus of Joe ground vehicles we have by 84. Stinger and Water Moccasin could be argued to be more important to the line in this year than the WHALE. But man, that hovercraft is the example of something that lives up to the hype even though over-hyped. |

1984 offered so many great toys, that it is difficult for me to choose from this list. So many memories, and we were fortunate to own five of the toys among the options included for this poll.
Easily, the toy we wanted most that year was the Killer W.H.A.L.E. hovercraft, but that just never happened because of the price, which was $17.99 (or $52.25 today when adjusting for inflation). Hasbro had finally created a G.I. Joe toy for this product line which was outside of our family's spending threshold. As kids we would only see that toy in commercial advertisements, and the Cutter action figure remained unavailable to us for that reason. We had plenty of fun with the Cobra Rattler that year, and the Cobra Water Moccasin too, so it was a good year for us. It wasn't until 2010 that I finally purchased a Killer W.H.A.L.E. toy for my children to play with. They enjoyed it immensely, so I will give it my vote with this poll.

I went with the Rattler. I reenacted issue 34 of the comic so many times with it and the Skystriker. I also have a lot of love for the Water Mocassin, Stinger, Slugger, VAMP Mk2 and the mini playsets.
'84 was a great year for figures and the comic, but the vehicles were hit or miss. I actually had everything from this year minus the WHALE. My buddy down the street had it, and I remember it being pretty flimsy. Also, for some reason I had 2 SHARCs, and it was kinda boring. |
