84 was definitely my favorite year for vehicles, and probably the line in general. It took Cobra from some goons with a lil' helicopter and a weird tank to a formidable fighting force, even though they didn't have a "proper" jet until the Raven.

I never had an original Rattler, but I did have both a Tiger Rat and later the A-10 Thunderbolt. It's a good plane (and certainly iconic), but figures don't fit in it well and the landing gear is flimsy.
Of this list, I voted for the WHALE. Never had one, but always wanted one, and still do. |

Rattler and Moccasin were/are iconic, but the WHALE hands down.

Close call between Rattler and Whale, but at the end of the day, Whale takes it. One of the coolest toys of all time!

The WHALE kind of reminds me of the old Star Destroyer from Star Wars. It was a vehicle but it could support so many figures, it was almost like a mobile playset. I remember the Christmas I got the WHALE, it was definitely awesome.

I think 1984 is hands-down the best year for ARAH vehicles. So many amazing ones in this year! I honestly can't decide who I am going to vote on here...I had the Chameleon, Stinger, WHALE (my older brother's friend also had a WHALE and when he came over one day in summer to play and brought all his Joes and his brand new WHALE, we had an epic Joe battle in the pool with 2 WHALES! I have a pic of that day somewhere in my family photos), Rattler and Water Moccasin as a kid and loved them all to death and played with all of them equally. My older brother borrowed his best friend's SHARC and Deep Six for a few weeks and I always thought that was a really fun toy to play with then! Remember making Deep Six submerge with his diving pump in my pool.
Ugh! This is a tough one! ***I remember in Kindergarten I brought my brand-new Rattler in for Show-And-Tell day (this was probably in Apr, May or Jun of '84). I was so proud of that thing! If I remember right, I didn't get the WHALE until that summer though, otherwise I would have brought that sucker in! lol

Chameleon - Too small and fragile.
Cobra A.S.P. - I like the basic design but it looks like a torture chamber when you put a figure inside it. Also the all blue, except for the wheels, makes it bland. Cobra C.L.A.W.- I never had it before the Funskool version. Friends did. It never did much for me as a toy. Cobra Rattler- Iconic, but the toy was had issues, like the landing gear being tight and breakable. Cobra Water Moccasin - The cockpit was too tight. The surface torpedo thing never stayed on. I like the boat's design, but it needed tweeking. Killer W.H.A.L.E. - I never got why the machine guns were assymmetrical were they originally intended to move like the Vamp's? Obviously the fan parts got fragile with age, but it's still a cool vehicle. S.H.A.R.C. - Junk. I've been over this before. Designed for one figure, often reissued/recolored without that figure. Torpedo always falling off. Fragile canopy design. The toon made it a Joe staple for season 1, and it's a shame the toys NEVER lived up to that. Sky Hawk - It's a bit problematic, minimal head room, no window glass, missiles falling off along with fins. I've never gotten a modern release, so I think it was improved in all aspects. Slugger - One man artillery machine, like the wolverine,...does that make sense? Autoloader, sure. But one guy is driver, gunner and commander. THUNDER IS JUST THAT GOOD. Stinger - Cobra also uses Cheetah mods. but funny in Canada, they already did and in the comic, too. There's the same issues with the vamp, the roll ball seems a bit low. But I like it. So WHALE or Stinger...hmmm? |

This was tough for me, as I had the WHALE, Water Mocassin, CLAW, Stinger, ASP and Skyhawk, I never owned the actual Rattler, I had both the TigerRat and a later Gold Rattler and man that is hard to beat IMO, so I voted for the Rattler.
