Back in the early mid 1980s during 1984 to 1986, Action figures werent that expensive.
They were pretty much just 2 to 3 bucks whether they were G.I. Joe, Star Wars or Masters of the Universe figures. Still a little disappointed at my parents not buying some of the figures like Lady Jay and Raptor and Duke when regular Duke figures were still around at the time in the early 1980s. |

I guess it's all about perspective, right? The dollar has lost roughly 64% of it's value due to inflation between '86 and now. So the price-to-product ratio isn't this big of a perceived "gap." Minimum wage back then in the U.S. for non-exempt jobs was $3.35 an hr. Depending on where in the country you lived and how you made your living, much like today, an action figure at roughly $3-$4 a pop, could be just below or even more than an hour's wage (especially after taxes)... much like it is today.

Never really crossed my mind. I was always grateful when my parents would buy me Joes. Were there times when I wanted a toy and didn’t get it it? Yes for sure but I’d never resent my parents for it. Joes although inexpensive at the time in terms of modern day money were a little more expensive back in the 80s due to inflation.

A general was less than 50 bucks in 1990. Im honestly surprised my parents got it for me for xmas as expensive as that was back then and without any idea if i wanted it or not.
Im glad for what they got me as a kid. There's no way they can do that now. |

I'm amazed at how many toys my mother did buy for me. As a single parent with a not-great-pay bank teller job, she somehow managed to keep me well stocked with G.I. Joe, Transformers, MASK, He-Man, and toys from a variety of other lines I played with over the years. And not just figures, but plenty of vehicles and playsets too, even big ones.
Did I get everything I ever wanted? No. Did I appreciate all the things she did for me? Not enough, unfortunately. But thinking back on it now, I don't know how she managed it and still put food on the table every week. |

My parents felt bad they couldn?t give us the Flagg for Christmas. We were fine with it because we had just about everything else. We were very happy. My cousin had the Flagg so I did get to play with it anyway. A $100 in the mid 80s was a lot of dough.

Not to be too rude, but just be happy that your parents bought you as many figures as they did.

My parents provided me with a roof over my head, a bed to sleep in, clothes on my back, food in my belly, healthcare, an education, and a loving home. Would never be disappointed in them for not buying me a toy.
I'm grateful for the toys I got, they did their best and as an adult I realize now how much they sacrificed to get me the toys I got. |

I'm mad that my parents didn't heavily invest in Micrsoft and Apple and Google when it was cheap so that we'd all be rich now. What assholes!!
What a bizarre thread. |
