army building wasnt even a concept in my mind until i got into collecting potf2 in 1997, and it was by accident. i was 14 and by then i was buying my own toys.
in some cases i wish i didnt go too crazy with it because i have a ton of cobra viper pits in their packages.

Army build may have been a strong term, but I definitely wanted more than one viper.

When I was a kid, my parents did their best to make our lives better. We didn’t have much money(my mom was a teacher and my dad was a police officer), but me and my brother had plenty of toys. When we were old enough, we started doing chores to get an allowance(mowing the lawn, cleaning, doing dishes, cooking, etc) of five dollars a week. As stated, that was enough for a figure or a comic book and some candy or a pop.
So I learned the value of working for a wage very young. I remember saving up for a Zartan and vehicles. Me and my brother saved up for a TTBP and we treasured that playset like gold because we worked hard together for it. We would get some bigger presents for Christmas or birthdays. I remember getting Megatron for Christmas and that was one of the best gifts I ever received. My brother got the Moray for Christmas and that was his favorite gift for a long time. I’m glad for how my parents loved me. It doesn’t matter what they bought me or material things. What matters is what we shared. |

I only had a handful of doubles in my Star Wars and Joe collection, and that was because my brother and I sometimes wanted the same figure for our own. We had 3 Stormtroopers, 2 Hoth Troopers, 2 Biker Scouts and 2 Royal Guards. For GI Joe, I think the only figure I ever had doubles of was the Cobra Trooper and only had 2.
My mentality as a kid was that I preferred getting an all-new figure over a repeat of another I already had and thought it was a waste to ask for a repeat over something new.

Bullshit. There are some real rotten parents out there and life is cheap enough to be given away free in backseats, barrooms and bombed-out basements. I will always be more than disappointed in any parent who whores out their children, for example.
Anyway, I think the OP means that figures were comparatively cheap and...eh, fuck, I dunno what he was driving at. Prognostication, I guess. For the examples you gave, I don't consider those individuals "parents" because the term "parents" to me means people who are responsible at providing and nurturing a young child so they can grow up to be adults that can contribute to society, the examples you gave doesn't fit that discription, those are irresponsible so-called adults and criminals. Anyway I can't see why someone would be dissapointed in something like that, when I was young and my parents wouldn't buy me certain toys, I simply did odd jobs like mow lawns in the summer and shovel snow in the winter, and when I had enough money, I rode my bike to Toys R Us and purchased it myself. |

Smoke, I was referring to the statement on the original post made "Still a little disappointed at my parents not buying some of the figures like Lady Jay and Raptor and Duke when regular Duke figures were still around at the time in the early 1980s." So "he" should not "be dissappointed" in something that happened long ago and was so trivial, when there are other matters that parents need to prioritize to provide their children, for example: a roof over your head, food on the table, clothes on your back, and so on, and his parents after all gave him life.
For the examples you gave, I don't consider those individuals "parents" because the term "parents" to me means people who are responsible at providing and nurturing a young child so they can grow up to be adults that can contribute to society, the examples you gave doesn't fit that discription, those are irresponsible so-called adults and criminals.
