I bought a couple of repro Sgt. Slaughter batons that just came in this weekend. They're by no means a perfect match to the originals (and I don't necessarily want them to be), but they look good in the figures' hands and cost me about 1/10 what authentic Slaughter batons would have. I'm very pleased with them.
Unfortunately, I made the mistake of posting about this on Facebook, which (as expected) brought out the gatekeepers moaning about how repro parts "ruin" the hobby. Meanwhile, the people price gouging a 1.25-inch sliver of plastic are apparently Class A valued individuals and a real credit to the collecting community. Ugh. It took all of ten minutes for the group moderators to delete my post and sanction me for daring to talk about repro parts. What a load of BS. |

"AFA graded is the only authority I trust. Everything else is a scam." "What's that? The grading agencies are mostly profit bubble scams and I get paid to say this? LIES, you're a repro scammer!!!" I swear, nothing made me cringe more than similar scum bags trying to repeat this in the used video game market recently and then Karl Jobst exposed their asses so hard it got news articles and the scammers got sued.

I bought a repro backpack for a Flash custom I did. I think that and a jetpack are my only experiences, but they've been reliable. Those accessory packs that Hasbro used to put out were fantastic ways to re-arm figures. There's no difference in my opinion. |

Eff those people. I love repros since they allow ARAH fans to complete their figures without being price-gouged for something so tiny. I finally got a repro Skymate boomerang a couple months back. I was not going to pay outrageous prices for a tiny piece of bright neon pink plastic lol
As long as the repro is different in some way so people who DO want the real thing don't get taken, I am all for it! I think I've picked up repros for Slaughter's baton, mics for Lift-Ticket, Heavy Metal, W.O.R.M.S., Sneak Peek and Coldfront as well as a few others. My Skymate is holding a blue boomerang from the Lanard figure called Boomerang Billy. It fits nicely in his holster thing. |

Repro parts, HA! I have repro figures. The Black Major Ninja Viper, Star Duster and Gold Head Steel Brigade all have a place on my shelf and I love them.

Yeah. I don't get the disdain, honestly. I know what I'm getting. I'm not trying to pass it off as anything other than something that looks cool with my stuff. I guess if I were saying "heyyyy look at my super rare Alley Viper in Python Patrol colors that you had to eat ten boxes of the Lucky Charms that turned your milk green to get" to try and make them *sound* official and/or try to rip someone off....but I'm just using them to pad the numbers on my Cobra displays.

According to my notes, I have repro Lift Ticket and Heavy Metal mics, a Dusty bipod, Hardtop pistol, Night Force Tunnel Rat flashlights, and now these batons. I regret none of them.

Yeah, the facebook fuckers are just assholes who think this shit is both an investment and an opportunity to fleece rubes for the sake of "authenticity." These were, are and will always be kid's toys. This isn't serious business and I'm sick of uptight losers taking all the fun out of it.
All that said, my only problem is with Chinese bootleggers who stole equipment/molds to produce stuff because that's outright theft. Same thing if they're creating bootlegs, but trying to sell them as the real thing. But I'm cool with someone who buys the product, reverse engineers it/scans it/whatever and produces new versions. So long as they aren't trying to pass the shit off as original and keep the prices reasonable, I don't see what the problem is. I got into TF Masterpiece for a minute, and I loved the knock-offs that acknowledged it was a knock-off with clever/goofy names and stuff. Sure, they stole someone else's design and engineering work, but they didn't claim to be selling "genuine authentic Transformers."

Although he's mostly transitioned away from that to focus on unique (frequently goofy) repaint and kitbash designs, he does still bring back the replicas from time to time. That sort of thing, I can understand people taking issue with. However, complaining that his Tiger Force Snake Eyes or Python Patrol BATS are a crime against collecting is just ridiculous. Nobody would mistake those as being authentic. |
