I prefer to think of them as guidelines rather than rules.....
* No accessories, no problem is my general rule of thumb, but there are some accessories I consider essential to the character. You couldn't give me a Battle Armor CC without the breathing hose (well, you could, but he's probably going in a box). Can't do a Serpentor without the backpack. Had to track down helmets for Scoop and Bazooka because not having them bothered me. Stuff like that. * Black Major is a-okay for troop building. I'm cool with those who don't like it, and it's okay if some of my troops don't "count" in some collectors' eyes. I like the pad the numbers, and that guy's stuff let me do just that for quite awhile. I also dig stuff like the Python Patrol stuff he did. It's all pretty expensive now, though. * Completion is for the birds. At least for me it is. I haven't done inventory in awhile, but I believe I've got 300ish o-ring guys on display. I'll occasionally have people ask me why I don't break out the guides, get the stuff I'm missing, and put a bow on the whole thing. Idk. I'm even pretty good friends with someone who did just that, and I think it's soooo cool, but, when push comes to shove, am I gonna pay for Skidmark just so I can say I've got him? Nah. I'm stupid happy wtih where the Joe collection is at. * No o-ring, no sale. Cobra Commander is an exception, and the WalMart Retros were exceptions. I spent a year or so gradually swapping the MEs I had with their vintage counterparts. Idk what it was. I just woke up one day and decided to go full o-ring. Classifieds are a different scale, so I don't hold them to this rule, but they're on a strict "I'm not making another shelf for these guys" rule, so I'm very, very selective with those. * I want to have every individual Cobra character. Troops are cool, but if it's a Croc Master or a Crystal Ball or a Gristle, then I want him. (Incidentally, I do not have Gristle, and it bugs me. Also need Night Creeper Leader. But anyway...) * Repros are fine. If it helps me save money, then I'm all for it. My wife made a cape for my Serpentor. Damn near a match for the original. And, if you can tell and don't like it, then ask *your* wife to make a cape for your action figure and see how it turns out. * It's super weird, but I can't display an unmanned vehicle. Idk why. I've got planes hanging from my ceiling, and you wouldn't be able to tell if they had figures in them or not, but they do. I've even specifically bought figures for the purpose of putting them in a vehicle where I'll have to squint my eyes to see them. I got obsessed with wanting to man the Bugg and the Mamba like the box art depicts. Which I pulled off. Not that you can tell with the Mamba. At all. I collect other things, so I've got other rules. (Batman figures without the yellow oval require great consideration because I've got way too much Batman sutff. No Ghost Egon ever ever ever. Shawn Michaels is banned from the wrestling shelf until he finds his smile - which he never will. No Horror Remake figures. Etc.)

When I was a kid the rule was whatever I could get my hands on beggars can't be choosers.
As an adult I started off wanting 1 of every figure that was an homage to arah 1982-92 or so, I wasn't paying attention past then so less attachment. Also for vehicles I wanted a Tomahawk, Havoc, TigerPaw because those were the primaries I had as a kid. I did get the recon sled, cobra jump pack, battlewagon, barracuda and maybe a jet with a gun handle later, but I ended up buying almost everything including vehicles extras etc. I dislike that I have so many versions of characters. I organized tackle box cases with the years from 1982-90 and put 1 of each in each place. I dislike non-hasbro released figures in this. It's some weird OCD thing. I do include the club's FSS figures although some of them the quality is lacking. As an example I made an amazing night force crazy legs when that was a gap figure, I can't bring myself to put that figure in, in its place is the clubs $200+ exclusive lazy paint job. I did put a custom marauders slaughter in the case that is made of parts from the club figures and a real slaughter head. Super expensive kitbash. It bugs me that these will basically never be made: I told myself I wasn't going to collect Kreo, I collected everything sometimes in duplicate. I made customs for missing figures. For classified I swore I wasn't going to get into it because I know damn well I don't have the space for figures that big or that many once they get rolling, also I hate the stomach crunch joint slash, if a classified figure doesn't have that or you can't see it geared it is a lot easier for me to like it. But I also knew before they started they would get me with troop builders like Viper and Bat. So far I have a weird assortment of classified that fall into the "I'm scared I won't order it and it will later be $100+" figures and figures I actually like or have sentimental attachment to. I have been able to pass on some figures including really expensive ones like serpentor/sdcc zartan/mindbender/hisstank etc. but they will keep getting me with troop builders and any releases from my core figures I had as a kid. I really don't have any rules. Wait, maybe some . Depends on the day though haha.
Before, when I started collecting, I had a good few. Only one figure per character, never pay more than 20 $ for a figure, never ever selling a figure that has been accepted inside the collection, armybuilding has no limits, etc. Since then, I've relaxed some and increased others, but mainly; -I buy what I like -GI Joe is and always will be 3.75 inch. Other sizes are for other things. If I have a figure like Pimp Daddy Destro Classified, which I do, is to mix with my Marvel Legends ;) . -I never buy carded, and if I do, I resell to fund my loose collection . -I always accept Hasbro's veredict on accesories, except when this defies all logic and intelligence. Hence, most tree accesories are distributed to whoever can better man them. -An accesory will only be given to a figure if he can really hold it. -Don't buy ridiculously broken, damaged or incomplete figures and vehicles, unless they are ridiculously rare. Hence, I will pass over some vehicles I really like because they are yellowed. -Armybuilding has limits, and more when speaking of vehicles, and I have reached certain, like 8 red Astro Vipers is enough. -I "might" sell something repeated or which I care very little, if I need to get something 10 times cooler, and if I can sell it for a high sum. -Even if I don't keep them together, or give them to other figures, I keep the accesories of all figures and vehicles, for a sort of strange completeness, and if I want to regress and give them back. So, even if I keep Payload v3 without weapons as they don't fit him at all, I keep the weapons in the event I might think otherwise. -Anything that looks like a GI Joe, is fit for the GI Joe universe -Repro I don't mind, I would prefer the flavour of the original, but I am not very bothered. Then again, I have never paid more than 6 $ for an accesory, so that wouldn't even buy me a repro . -Black Majors are mainly silly, but I accept any I like, and there are plenty . -As there is no nostalgia for me, most probably any figure from 82-83 will not interest me and I will resell to get more of my favourite years, unless it so full of defects it holds no value.

Cool thread, a lot of my rules are similar to those already posted so I’ll just list some of the different ones.
I am a completist, all vehicles and figures need original parts and weapons but also no stress marks, cracks or paint wear. I sold or traded those that don’t meet that condition or use them for fodder figures in displays. Duplicates are required for any figure or vehicle on display. They’re kinda my backup in case something happens like breakage, fading, or discoloration. My original collection is kept separate from any of my newer acquired figures and vehicles. They likely will never see the light of day again. Finally, Absolutely no ME figures! Aside for their obvious flaws. I guess I blame them for the fall of my beloved o rings. I consider them the 13 year mistake and am buying classified and the new o rings as much as I can so the don’t crop up again. I know that’s way too dramatic but my disdain for them runs deep. |

I never knew there were rules. Pretty much the two deciding factors when I was a kid was if I was getting good grades and if we could afford for me to have a new Joe toy. I didn't have them all but I've got no complaints about my childhood. Now I collect my favorites so my runts can have some of ol' dad's memories in hand. I've even got my niece to give a good "Yo Joe" to the cartoons. It's just for fun.

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of posting about this on Facebook, which (as expected) brought out the gatekeepers moaning about how repro parts "ruin" the hobby. Meanwhile, the people price gouging a 1.25-inch sliver of plastic are apparently Class A valued individuals and a real credit to the collecting community. Ugh. It took all of ten minutes for the group moderators to delete my post and sanction me for daring to talk about repro parts. What a load of BS. |

I bought a couple of repro Sgt. Slaughter batons that just came in this weekend. They're by no means a perfect match to the originals (and I don't necessarily want them to be), but they look good in the figures' hands and cost me about 1/10 what authentic Slaughter batons would have. I'm very pleased with them.

As long as the repro is different in some way so people who DO want the real thing don't get taken, I am all for it! I think I've picked up repros for Slaughter's baton, mics for Lift-Ticket, Heavy Metal, W.O.R.M.S., Sneak Peek and Coldfront as well as a few others.
