I don't collect everything in lines unless it's small or easy to complete like ME Retro
3 3/4 Joes RAH through new-sculpt were opened unless I have doubles from promo sets 2006 Slaughter & Marauders stay MOC 25th single cards stay MOC, the vehicles were opened though I regret it Classified with windows get opened to go on display but I swap rotations so they end up in the box for storage when I'm done Everything plastic-free is opened except vehicles Sigma 6 AT Recondo is MIB but everything else S6 was opened Funko Pops! I keep MIB for now, Forever Clever sets were put together 12inch collector sets stay MIB |

I didn't think I did, but going over it, I guess I do have a quite a few rules I mentally track while I'm collecting. But because of those rules, I'll never own a complete collection of Joes.
- I get what I like. Which is always the most important I suppose. Which means the first year is out, because I find it to be really bland and boring. Whereas I started buying heavily during the neon era, so it doesn't bother me and I love the way it pops. So my collection is full of the later stuff. - I try to get everything complete. File cards are nice, but not necessary. For characters later in the line who came with weapon trees, I really don't really care about having those. - For display, unless it's integral to the character design or visual, I don't normally keep spring loaded launchers with characters. - I don't like color variations/repaints of the same characters. So from that, a lot of sub-teams are out. Tiger-Force, Python Patrol, Night Force, etc? No Thanks. - I love vehicles, but price and space are always an issue. If I can find a good deal on a cool vehicle, I'll try to add it to the collection. I also don't mind modern versions being added to the collection vs the originals. - Everything I have is loose and I don't look to buy things new. - I really haven't had to deal with it too much, but I don't mind repro parts/pieces at all. But just be sure to label it as such. - I usually focus on characters I at one point had, or just wish I had. Which is a lot. But it helps me focus and have mini goals. The snobby, elitist attitude some collectors have about repro parts or accessories being a scourge on the hobby can really be insufferable.
Saw some of that on Facebook tonight and frankly it pissed me off. |

I pretty much have every '82-'94 ARAH figure now in my collection save for about maybe 10 that I still need to pick up (Zap, silver pads Grand Slam and a few from '93 and '94. I generally do not collect repaints for my collection. I definitely require all acessories for mine, with the exception of the later years like 1991-1994. I throw out or don't collect those awful oversized, neon spring-loaded weapons and usually replace them with more realistically colored ones.
Filecards are not required, although I am now slowly collecting those and building my collection for the '82-91 years when they were all the same size and design. Since I am a customizer, my collection is also special to me because I added missing paint apps to nearly al of my ARAH figures as well as correcting paint app mistakes. I used to have a decent ME collection and had pretty much every figure from 2007-2014ish but never finished it and quit that line around 2015. I recently donated that collection to a fellow Tanker. My Classified collection is basically everything. I buy them all. I generally try to only get ARAH era characters, but the others are good for custom fodder so I still grab 'em, too.

My rules are pretty simple, in order to keep the collection minimal: no Dreadnoks except Zartan, no Python Patrol or Tiger Force, less than 12 boxed vehicles (to save space), the only Joe's I collect are Snake Eyes, Jinx and Storm Shadow (version 2), everyone else is a Cobra or Iron Grenadier.
Also, everything is boxed or carded, and I stick to characters I have some attachment to (some I had as a kid, some I wanted but never owned), or it becomes a cluttered Completionist pre-ordering nightmare. Piss off with your Python and Crimson BATS lol... As for Classified, I only have 6 figures, and will most likely pre-order Scrap-Iron when he's up. Oh, and no Super7 Reaction shit. I bought a few then took them back to Target. Impulse buys. I looked at them on my shelf and was like, "THESE are 20 dollars each?" |

i have some:
the only "focus" is 1987-1990" it was originally 87-89, but 1990 was so easy to get and looking at them they are really some great figures AND that's when i was actively playing with them and being excited about gijoe. plus i'd miss out on having eco warriors- and eco warrior's flint is a masterpiece. it's also the reason why i added the 90 to my focus becuase i found i had a lot of 1990 figures in my collection but not really thinking much about how great they are. when i first moved off to college i brought 2 figures with me and eco warrior's flint was one of them; and i dont remember the second one. that's how great of a figure that is to me. the "focus" explained. single carded figures, mail ins, vehicle drivers and special figures (night force, tiger force, etc.) to complete a figure within that focus they need: figure, all accessories, filecard. my single card 1987 figures are all complete in this manner. vehicle drivers, mail ins, etc are not all yet complete. to display the figure they have to have all that stuff before they're out of the ziploc bag and ikea box. file cards are stored in a picture album. figures not in my window: it doesnt matter if they're complete or not. my jvc and other first new sculpt era RAH sculpt o-ring figures are mostly complete because it was easier to just keep them that way. if it's a figure i like i try to get them as complete as i can though. so like, my 1985 flint i am pretty sure is complete short of his filecard and it doesnt bother me as much as it does not having completing my night force falcon because his filecard is stupid expensive. vehicles: their completeness is the driver (if applicable) all their missles and whatever, not too terribly concerned about the blueprints. they have to be complete to be displayed. i dont have many vehicles because of space, so they're generally complete. the exception to an incomplete displayed vehicle is the defiant booster and shuttle, because it's just impossible to complete without taking out a loan and it takes up a ton of space on a shelf for a box of things im never going to display. i dont have to have every vehicle, just the ones i like. my aircraft are complete and hanging from the ceiling (finally finished doing that after 7 years of owning a house) Last edited by THEDARKONE508; 02-07-2023 at 10:05 AM.. |

This is fun and got me to think about Joe collecting guidelines I have that I've never formally laid out.
*I collect loose and have no interest in MIB/MOC; I specifically avoid boxed items or items with boxes because I know other collectors want them. *I have been actively collecting Joe since 1997, but right now my focus is on rebuilding my childhood collection - almost everything from '82-'87 excluding BF2000. I need a Flagg. *My vintage collection is nearing the point where I'm really going to have to consider putting my 25th/ME stuff in storage, but I LOVE the troop building I was able to do with that line and how it looks displayed (and yes - it has occurred to me how much vintage I could buy from selling dozens of ME troops). *1987-1994 stuff if the price is right and it's cool. *I love stuff like trash cans, belt buckles, hats - I buy any 80s licensed goods when I feel the price is right. *I was a Classified completist until the Blue Ninjas. At that point I decided I could cherry pick. I'm buying from pretty much every Joe line right now. *I can't imagine I'll ever care about international releases, mainly for price reasons. *While minty stuff is nice, my general rule for condition is "What would mine look like if I still had it?" I took pretty good care of my stuff, so this means slight wear/stress marks with no breakage; I have not had to make a decision about something with elbow cracks yet and I'd rather not. *I want all of the accessories, but if I don't remember them I'm not as worried about it. For example, I recently bought a Zanzibar without a pistol because I didn't remember him having a pistol. If I find one, cool. If not, whatever. *Repro accessories are fine as long as they look right. *In general I'm patient and prefer buying in person, but sometimes I get an itch for something and have to buy online. Mostly I look at this as a hobby I'll probably be pursuing for the rest of my life, so there's no urgency. Last edited by PhantomTrblmkr; 02-07-2023 at 10:44 AM.. |

Yeah I remember the Vintage collectors on Rebelscum losing their shit when the Retro line was announced, while the rest of us celebrated. I stopped going there, all they do is complain about reproduction blasters and whether they float in water or something...

i have an ig88 rifle that i dont have any idea how i got, but there's absolutely no way as a 8 year old i'd have a bootleg ig88 rifle and im sure it would fail the test depending on who you ask what means the test is a pass or fail. i dont use the accessory pack weapons. i hate them. but im starting to lean into the idea of using reproduction weapons. i dont suspect my wife will sell my collection when im dead. it'll probably end up in the trash or at goodwill and at that point it doesnt matter; and frankly, i dont care about other people's collections whether they use them or not or how pissed off a particular roid head in the largest RAH gijoe facebook group bursts a vein in his arm about it; while protecting the shadiest fucking action figure grader to ever exist. i do have a list to keep track of what i have or need and i'll very likely make a note of it on my list; whether that list gets out and does anyone any good is the question. |
