I know some GI Joe fans hate Star Brigade with a passion, while others enjoy what it accomplished and tried to do. They might even enjoy the cartoony campiness of the Manimals line, too. I don't really know if Hasbro's scatterbrained approach for this line was meant to save the brand or not..it seemed like the nail was already in the coffin for GI Joe by the mid 90's, anyways. Let's say you could dial back the clock and try it differently..what would you do? Would you want Hasbro to continue the gaudy ridiculousness of the Manimals line, and carry on with the Replicators? I actually think those could have been pretty cool, despite the proposed major sacrifice in articulation.
As for me, I would have liked a more realistic narrative about Cobra's race for space supremacy. Destro would have a big role in this, maybe by bringing back the Iron Grenadiers in some fashion, or having a completely new army at his disposal. He would have some really wicked M.A.R.S space tech that would give Cobra the advantage, here. I wouldn't do Power or Armor tech fighters. Instead, there would be these deluxe figure for an "Asteroid Ambush" line. Maybe 3 Joes, 3 Cobras/Grenadiers. They'd each have unique asteroid/planetoid things that would transform or eject small assault craft or projectiles. I know it might sound kind of boring to kids to get a fake plastic rock with your figure, but I dunno.. Glow in the dark figures? I was thinking maybe a return to the Dreadknok's that changed color in the sun, but maybe glow in the dark would be more appropriate here. How it would be strung in to the narrative, I don't really know..maybe a new camo that could only be identified with thermals? Re-issues of failed 1991/1992 vehicles. The Patriot and Attack Cruiser would make perfect rover vehicles for either side. No Armor Bot..instead, re-issue the Crusader in a gray or gray-blue color scheme, with some neon 90's highlights. A new drone/shuttle design to go along with it would be really cool too. To match the Crusader, Cobra would have an equivalent by way of armored drop ship. This thing would have at least one pack-in figure and would also come with a rover scout as well. The top of the vehicle could be taken off or unhinged to show battle stations and compartments and stuff. At least one space station/moon base and another that can be assembled in modules..ideally, a line of figures and/or a series of medium sized vehicles might come packed with a bonus part of the base that you could fit together like some Battle Force 2000 thing. And lastly, while I really liked the old faces that Hasbro used for their Star Brigade lineup, here are some others that I wish made the cut: JOES: Skymate Salvo Dusty Spirit Stretcher Grunt Downtown Jinx Red Star COBRAS: Zarana/Zandar Scrap Iron Firefly Laser Viper V2 Overlord Darklon Voltar Nullifers V2 Strato Vipers V2 Wild Weasel |

I liked Star Brigade. The Armor Bot was a really underrated vehicle. Space Shot was one of the cooler end-run figures. Star Brigade Duke was a great design.
Effects and Predacon were the final GIJoe figures I ever bought from the original run. I can still remember finding the whole Star Brigade series in Target in 1994. Good memories, although it was melancholy at the time... |

Although, to me he looks more suitable as like a futuristic cop/urban warrior in a sci-fi setting. It definitely was melancholy, although I think I was too young to realize it. By the time shelves had dried up and we were only seeing Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter Movie figures, the melancholy had settled in for me. |

Star Brigade needed a TV show to support it. Those dumb commercials weren't enough. The TV shows, even DIC as much as it's criticised, were a useful tool for conveying the vision that the designers had for the toys, and filling in weird gaps. Star brigade had a very rushed representation in the comics that had to be shared with *groan* Snake Eyes *groan*
I think this is what hurt Battle Force 2000 and some of the other offshoots as well. I am not sure what 'battle corps' was supposed to be if every GI Joe and Cobra was in it. Why not just call it GI Joe? Last edited by BizCopperhead; 01-09-2022 at 02:04 AM.. |

Star Brigade is one of my favorite subteams. Although, I would rebrand them as Space Force, as it is a real thing now; just like we have Joes that are Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. Yes, a new shuttle would be nice, but Cobra always needed one to drop all those T.A.R.G.A.T.s! A modular space station would be cool. Since the Defiant has a cargo bay and the Crusader has a drone pod in it, I would make the third shuttle have a lunar land based vehicle in it; maybe a repainted or redesigned L.C.V.

Make all the characters new and unique. I never got into new versions of characters I already had. Duke version 7 was not interesting to me

Remembering where G.I. Joe left off, the Defiant and Crusader vehicles were intended as the next generation of spacecraft and strongly resembled the Lockheed Martin X-33 spaceplane. An updated G.I. Joe Star Brigade could use their own version of the Space Force vehicle known today as the Boeing X-37B, which could have a combination of lasers and missiles for the payload area. The Cobra space forces could be very interesting, and the Cobra B.A.A.T. (Battle Armored Android Trooper) would make for a great action figure if redesigned to be fully articulated.

Stay out of space. I felt the Defiant was way too out there.
GI. Joe is Delta Force essentially. Keep things grounded, but go slightly sci-fi. Use current military proto-types as your starting point. |

I love the concept of Manimals, the execution was just not sculpted very well.
Genetic manipulation is the future. COBRA!!
