What are some of your favorite figures and vehicles from say, '88-'90?
This is the period of ARAH that I always find myself drawn to. There's a deep sense of nostalgia that resonates with me when I look back on the Marvel comic from issues 90-130, too. I was too young to really experience and appreciate this short span of time in the history of the toy line. I started to get GI Joes of my own by 1991 or so. Naturally, I misplaced all of the intricate accessories and weaponry within days, and lost the figures within mere weeks. I probably bonded the most with Battle Corps stuff, and whatever else I could get my hands on retroactively through trades with friends growing up. Things like the Raider or Razorback ebbed into the realm of sci-fi and always mystified me as a little kid. When I'd find something like this in a toy pile at someone's house, I almost couldn't believe they were from the GI Joe line. They were so imaginative and unlike anything I'd seen in the Sunbow TV show. While it's universally understood that the pinnacle of the ARAH toy line was probably in the mid 80's for most, what are some must-haves for your collection from this point in time for the franchise? Here are some of mine: Bullhorn Big Ben Downtown Snake Eyes V3 Freefall Muskrat Stalker V2 (gotta have the kayak!) TARGAT Cobra Commander 1990 Incinerators Nullifier Desert Scorpion Range Viper Alley Viper Vehicles...I wince when I look over the prices on these: Cobra Condor HISS II Desert Fox 4WD Locust Phantom X-19 Cobra Hurricane |

For me, 1987-1990 are one bloc, and then 1991-92 are the next bloc.
I realize that 1987 has some good arguments for fitting into the Sunbow era still, since the Rawhides and Cobra La were in The Movie and since (I think?) Ron Rudat was still involved with a few. But I feel that all of the Rawhides have a kind of dual citizenship in both the Sunbow and the late 80s-1990 era, and then some of the other figures and vehicles from 1987 like Sneak Peak, Crazylegs, Fast Draw, Psyche-Out, Techo-Viper, and Outback all feel late 80s to me, as do the Mamba and the MCC, just to pick a few. 1991 brings in the Snake Eyes in my profile pic, orange faceshield CC, CGI, BAT v2, Desert Scorpion, Incinerators, Heavy Duty, and lots of other bright characters, so I feel it?s a pretty clear, well-marked change. Alley Viper, Night Viper, Range Viper, Saw Viper, Laser Viper, and Night Creeper all fit well with the 91-92 vibe too, imo, but for me they fit their original era too, so I likewise see them as dual citizens. Big Ben is a 1991 who probably fits better in the previous era, though he?s not unwelcome in his actual own. Anyway, some of my favorites from the 87-90 era other than the Rawhides are Snake Eyes v3, Storm Shadow v2, Stalker v2, Rock & Roll v2, Outback, Tunnel Rat (singling him out despite his being a Rawhide), Techno Viper, Alley Viper, Night Viper, Night Creeper, and Destro v2 with the Despoiler. I?ve always admired the Hammer jeep, Night Ray cigarette boat, and Crusader shuttle repaint as vehicles, and Night Force and Tiger Force in general. I?m also fond of Road Pig because of his antics with Zarana in the comics, and of Charbroil because he was my first Joe. I have and really like the Hurricane VTOL or V/STOL too, but for me it fits better with 91-92. Others that aren?t at the top of my personal list but that seem very popular are Hit & Run, Shockwave, battle armor CC, Iron Grenadier, Bullhorn, and Saw Viper. Actually after mulling it over for a few minutes, I think if I were rich enough I would probably display a lot of 1986 figures with my 87-90 team as well.
Low Light, Beach Head, Gen Hawk, Mainframe, Dial Tone, Sci Fi, Roadblock ‘86, Dr Mindbender, Serpentor, several BATs, and a bunch of Vipers would for sure be on that imaginary shelf if I could. I’m not saying I’d keep them out of my Sunbow lineup necessarily — rather, I’d have enough for both displays if I had the cash. But if I only had enough for one, I might actually place the majority of the 86s with the late 80s group. Sunbow season 2 had a very different feel with the writing change, which I don’t say to knock it. |

Even though the cartoons, Marvel comic and the vehicles were on the down slope, the later years gave us some fantastic figures. Storm Shadow 88, Alley Viper, TARGAT, Night Viper, Night Creeper, Slice & Dice are among my top picks.

I liked Big Boa because of the muscled sculpt and color scheme like X-Men Colossus.

I'm pretty selective in my collection from 1987 forward, but these are the ones I did like:
1988 Astro Viper Hit & Run Iron Grenadier Muskrat Repeater Road Pig Secto-Viper Shockwave Storm Shadow Toxo-Viper 1989 Backblast Countdown Deep Six Night Viper Payload Rock N Roll 1990 Ambush Bullhorn Decimator Laser Viper Metal Head Rock Viper Salvo Saw Viper Undertow When it comes to vehicles, I'm also selective on these years, and you can see I didn't care for much of the 1989 line. 1988 BUGG Phantom X-19 Rolling Thunder Stellar Stiletto Warthog AIFV Crusader Shuttle 1989 Raider 1990 Avalanche Hammerhead Locust Piranha Rage Sky Patrol Sky Hawk Sky Patrol Sky SHARC |
