In a massive swell of nostalgia I impulsively snagged a 1990 Retaliator off eBay tonight..one thing the listing noted is that it lacks the string that you loop and feed into the back of the chopper to make the winch workable. Any one have any ideas how I can replace it? What kind of string would be good? Will it be easy to thread through the vehicle? The condition of the toy itself looks great so I don't think getting any working parts to move will be an issue.

Upon some basic investigation I concluded that I'd probably need some kind of thin nylon string but if anyone has any recommendations I'd greatly appreciate it.

I bought nylon cord from Walmart's craft/sewing section for zipper pulls. Maybe $3+.

Thanks for your input. I know it was a silly question to ask but I was worried about not being able to feed string through the winching mechanism since the thing is pre-built. I'm gonna go get a spool of cheap nylon!

It's not silly, I asked in the FLAGG thread about the string for the crane but never got an answer. I ended up just using something I had in the closet that worked fine. Sorry I can't help with the Retaliator, I don't think I've ever seen one in person.

I feel like the few vehicles and playsets that included the use of string in their play features probably all used the same kind of stuff. It's definitely gotta be a nylon string, but it's kind of tricky to figure out what's the sturdy stuff and what isn't. I don't really have a background in sewing or fabrics so I am kinda clueless.
I love the Retaliator! While the Tomahawk is probably revered as the king of 'Joe copters, I think this one is great..it's dual function as a utility/rescue copter and fast attack bomber is really neat. The tail section can be posed to make the thing look like an attacking insect or something. It's fantastic! The only time I ever saw a FLAGG was on the shelf at the now defunct retailer Child's World. Huge playsets and larger vehicles were never part of my childhood..probably because my parents didn't want me monopolizing the floor of the living room so much. |
