Oh my goodness. I am right there with you my friend. Same exact boat. No wife here though. It's a whole new wold for me. Been longer than 10 years for me. But just the same issues. The prices are insane. Finding good figures at even respectable prices in c9 or above is really hard and eBay if filled with cracked elbows. I feel like I am in over my head and I do believe I am. I was once a pro at this stuff but the game has changed vastly.
I bought the 25th Anniversary Hooded Cobra Commander and was not impressed at all. Some gaps in the releases as well. They are cool but just not for me. Just bought a few Retros and those were given away to a friend's kid asap. Again, not for me. Vintage all the way for me. It's SO expensive now!! I am focused on getting my favorites that are low level but even they are expensive now...lol. Last edited by Archangel36; 01-01-2022 at 04:35 AM.. |

I'm fairly lucky, because my brothers and I had a fairly big collection when we were kids and we never sold anything. Some of those toys are broken of course. Got back into collecting Joes a few years ago and I'm trying to complete ARAH 1982-1994. Still missing a lot and the prices are indeed insane.

My advice buddy is search local and join a decent country based FB group, actually join several and find out which are full of douches. Then buy small amounts from sellers and find out who is honest, connect with them and work deals on the side. I have most of what I want now. sure i overpaid 25% because of the times.. but ya only buy clean and tight and complete.. otherwise you try to sell crap few collect and will get hosed. Or hope and pray for much needed full line reissues but i think we will only get the greatest hits. the irony is the most manfuactured joes are the most expensive. I am super glad SS can goto hell thanks to the reissue thats a bunk ass figure to collect no such thing as mint and even if it is its only a matter of time

Good luck trying to complete the set. In the age of post-COVID where people might have money and fear missing out, the prices on lots of collectible stuff in general has spiked and it does really seem insane. I am selectively collecting stuff throughout the original ARAH line and it's defeating to realize how expensive some of this stuff has been and is gonna be. I especially would like to troop build a bit, maybe like 2-4 guys per figure type. I'm constantly on eBay wrestling with the idea and in disbelief..I wish I had the foresight years ago when loose, incomplete figs were like no more than 10-15 dollars. |

Good advice..I usually buy online and feel like I get overcharged because there is really nothing local around me, here. Like 10 years ago the last of the small comic and card shops closed up..that's actually where I got a bunch of loose 'Joes from. How do you suggest getting on the good side of sellers without coming off like a prick desperate for a deal? |

I was a little lucky and started collecting early in 2020 before the prices went way high, plus I have a couple of really close vintage/modern toy stores close by that were selling good complete stuff cheap(until prices really skyrocketed early in 2021 and their prices shot up accordingly), so I was able to get a ton of filler figures and vehicles. Now, however, it hurts when I see even the crappy figures going for $30 and up....and don't get me started on the mail-ins and other rarities.
I went nuts and spent around $2500 from September to October(poor credit card). I did however, get many good complete figures and vehicles, including some really nice valuable ones, so good deals are still out there if you are patient and vigilant. |

It's a good rule of thumb that if a figure comes with a knife, small pistol, microphone, antenna, walkie talkie, etc, those parts are more valuable than the rest of the gear and figure combined.

That's why I make sure 99% of my pick ups are complete. In fact, I'll buy a figure that's beat to hell if all of the accessories are present, in most cases.

I've bought busted figures as well with complete accessories/weapons, because it is definitely cheaper to buy parts to fix the figure itself than the rare accessory, which usually goes for the same price you paid for the busted figure with all accessories. I am also not above buying a repro part if it is worth it(i.e. the Sneak Peek Mic, or a Dusty bipod). |
