I guess I look at it in a different way with my vintage Joes. Many of my vintage Joes I've had since I was a kid, and many I have acquired within the past couple of years as I got back into collecting. Many of my childhood Joes had at least a broken crotch, thumb or paint rubbed off, and many that I recently acquired had the same problem. So I just fixed them up and now they look as good as new. You can look up Toy Palloi on Youtube, he has so many great techniques for repairing your Joes.
And a few months back I purchased Zanzibar and his Air Skiff from Mercari. The figure was in great shape but the Air Skiff was a broken mess. Now it sits in my collection cabinet looking as good as (well almost) new. Here is my video showing how I repaired the Air Skiff: https://odysee.com/@daikaijusaurus:5...qKET9HpvnHp8Co The bottom line is, these are 30+ year old toys and they are going to break no matter what. But as long as you know how to repair them and make them look decent, that's what counts. Most of my Joes have been repaired but they look great on display and I love going into my toy room everyday and just looking and admiring how awesome they are. Even my wife enjoys my toy room! How awesome is that!

Yup, experienced the exploding heels on my Zartan when I tried to put him on a stand, but won't be making that mistake again. I have to say that most of my Joes have held up pretty well (knock on wood), but I'm pretty careful with them. I do take them out and play with them from time to time and it's been ok.
I don't even worry about cracked elbows anymore as I've come to accept that it's part of vintage Joe collecting. The only cracked elbow that bothers me is Night Viper for some reason... I guess cause both of them I have have pretty large cracks, and I love that figure. Thankfully Hasbro are releasing o-ring Joes again! I pre-ordered both the Storm Shadow/Snake Eyes and Skystriker sets, and really hope the Skystriker not only gets fully funded, but also unlocks all the figures, cause that would mean I would have 8 new o-ring Joes! As cool as Classified figures are, and I got 3 of them, they just don't connect with me nearly as much as o-rings do, so I'm super excited that Hasbro are bring back o-rings, and as they said, they are "going big" on it. This way I can display my vintage Joes, and still be able to play with the new ones without concern. Also, the new ones will have much longer laster o-rings and slightly softer forearms, so broken thumbs and cracked elbows won't be a concern. This is a great time to be a Joe collector IMO. |

I got almost all of my vintage figures from 2000-2006. If I were starting today, I'd probably have very few vintage figures. I'm not buying at the top of the market. So for example, I wouldn't have the 1984 Firefly, I'd be content with the 2000 brown camo and Urban Division versions, both very nice figures.

Both of those Firefly figures are awesome too! The 2000 version is probably my favorite. |

i sold off all my vintage joes a few years ago when prices started to skyrocket and I decided to leave the hobby. I tried returning last year but prices were to high so I went with Star Wars the Vintage collection cause those figures were really cool. but now that o-ring joes are coming back. Im all in and will buy mostly everything that is released unless its something I dont like. better than paying the crazy ebay prices for figures now

The biggest pain for me is just the gaping hole it leaves in my wallet. While I try to control my impulse purchases, the pandemic has turned me into a crazed panic buyer. So afraid of missing out on a rare opportunity that often, I won't hesitate.
My Vintage collection is mostly figures but lately I have found the resolve to build up a curated collection of childhood favorites..things I had, or things I always wanted to have. I never really got into the Modern Era stuff but I bought a stack of Walmart Retro Wave figures and was severely disappointed. They are very detailed but cheap as all hell. It made me realize that really, the "Vintage" stuff is the way to go. The prices can be ludicrous for second hand pieces of plastic, but for collectors that understand the weird transcendence and memories associated with these relics, it's priceless. I don't really mind light dents and dings on my toys. Part of the deal with 'Joes growing up was that if you were inheriting someone's stuff or trading with a school pal, you were bound to get some beat up figs or vehicles with broken or missing parts. It adds character, and it's part of the history of the specific piece. |

36 years old... literally yelled NOO when I geared up my lucky find of a complete firefly.. only to hear the click of the gun going into his left hand and realizing it was his thumb snapping off...
Moment of silence... hoping for a support group... lol But seriously.. I returned to joe collecting after 10 years (realized 25th doesn't do it for me) and back in the game for my own display... hunting deals.. but between weak plastic, missing parts, yellowing... this is HARD. One new thing I found out about was elbow cracks... seriously!? How do you all manage? Now I have to buy some overpriced ebay FF to get a new arm.. anyway tried ranting to my wife and she looked at me like I have two heads, so im here lol |

Thanks to god, I more or less completed my vintage collection many years ago when they were still cheap. I am missing a few joes, and many accesories, but anyway, that keeps going on the hunt :P . It will be terrible the day I have everything! I will start to get only customs!
The bad thing is the storage, my joes yellow as heck. I had a nearly complete near mint collection, and now everything that can yellow more or less has. I am slowly swapping them, but it is much more complicated and expensive now. This year I plan to get proper weather control just to keep my Joes ok!

Some gaps in the releases as well. They are cool but just not for me. Just bought a few Retros and those were given away to a friend's kid asap. Again, not for me. Vintage all the way for me. It's SO expensive now!! I am focused on getting my favorites that are low level but even they are expensive now...lol. Last edited by TheGIJoeZone; 12-25-2021 at 12:51 AM.. |
