For me, it was Firefly's heel that shattered the same day I got him.
Cracked elbows are just something you'll need to learn to live with. So long as it's not bad enough for the arm to fall apart, they don't bother me. Some figures are so prone to them that you'll probably never find an example without cracks - such as the entire 1988 figure lineup. I challenge you to find a Charbroil without cracked elbows. I'd wager there are very few like that still in existence. |

I just had that happen recently. Paid $70 for a straight arm Stalker, which is a good deal nowadays. When I got him, I attempted to change the o-ring and the screwdriver slipped and I definitely did not have a good grip on the figure because the torso shattered and the right arm broke off at the post. Pain.
I don't mind cracked elbows at all, but I can't handle broken thumbs or crotches. I have a Cutter with a broken crotch(only paid $8 for him however) and I'm surfing every day to see if I can get a new crotch for him without having to buy an entire figure. And of course I had to check my Charbroil...cracked left elbow. |

Thanks, I think Zartan is the one figure I haven't replaced the O-ring in yet. Zandar and Zarana also have the same sonic welded torsos, but both of them had broken O-rings so I went ahead and cracked them open. Haven't touched Zartan yet since his O-ring still has a little tension.

I had heels explode on me while fitting them on figure stands and then some would break during display from the tight fit. I've gotten in the habit of shaving down the pegs to just fit well enough to support them.
Cracked elbows also don't bother me unless it completely flops and cant be posed. Discoloration is my only pet peeve. I'll cannibalize parts to build a good figure, but we all know its eventual..... Enjoy em while we got em. |

You don't normally see them as frequently on later figures but this seems to be an exception. |

Regarding heels, for any figure in my collection that I suspect has brittle plastic (e.g. the entire 1982 lineup) or any figure where the foot hole doesn't easily fit onto the stand peg on the first try without forcing it, I will not use the peg at all. It's not worth the risk.
In those cases, I stick the figure's feet to the stand using clear museum putty. It holds well, it's mostly invisible, and it's easily removable without causing any damage to the plastic or the paint. |

I started collecting vintage Joes in 2000 when I graduated from college. It was great being able to get all the figures I never had as a kid, and I knew all the gear was original cause the repro market hadn't exploded yet.
But Father Time comes for us all, even toys. I don't mess with them anymore. Just leave them in a box in the closet. Even handling a vintage Joe is asking for trouble. Crotches, heels, thumbs, and especially the hairline elbow fractures are absolutely inevitable. White turns to yellow....blue turns to an ugly green. The life span of these figures are coming to an end. I'm glad I got a few years of happiness out of them in the early 2000s but the heartache of watching them disintegrate is too much now. Thank goodness we have a lot of newer options of mostly the same characters, be it the figures reissued directly from the old molds, the "new era" (ugly) figures, the modern era stuff that's really amazing, and now Classified. I feel safe handling all of that stuff but I'll most likely never "touch" the vintage stuff again. You've got mint on card, CGC graded figures turning yellow, with cracked arms and broken rubber bands. There's just nothing we can do about it. Thank goodness for the new stuff. |

Ha, yes....my 83 Tripwire popped a sliver off when I put him on a stand. Not terribly noticeable so I am not worried about replacing him or the leg.

The late 90s TRU exclusives, RAHC from the early 2000s and the o-ring joes released during the VvV, Spy Troops, Joe vs Cobra era all seem to be holding up ok in my collection - I credit the softer plastic. I've spoke of my fondness for that era of o-ring joes more than once. |
