This is an interesting point. For many it was the start of their journey as a collector.

I think it's fair to separate this batch from the 82-94 run on account of just there being different people at the wheel and the lack of any meaningfully new tooling besides heads. To not also call them "vintage" is silly to me though, they're all old enough at this point. Eventually, you gotta yield some classification to the passage of time.
But, I personally will always group them together because for me they were still part of my childhood and were actively played with as toys. It's always been a little wild to me how much people treat 94 as such a hard cut off, because my perspective as a kid was nearly uninterrupted access to O-ring figures that were still "G.I.Joe" to me, even if they were Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. The Street Fighter movie line in particular was an excellent holdover for it's vehicles - that's the first way I got to experience some all time great molds with it's versions of the VAMP, Dragonfly, and Snowcat. Probably a better lineup of vehicles than G.I.Joe itself had had in years! It really only amounted to a two year break after all, which was handily covered by a few Corps! in 96 when the fighting game figures were drying up. Anyway I don't have much of a point to make here aside from just saying I was certainly happy to see G.I.Joe return in the format I liked the most in 97, but since the general format of toy was still around, and lots of 93 stuff lingered in small stores for years, I've never seen 94 as such a climactic end of an era as many people more oriented to 80's figure collecting seem to see it.

I loved these and almost had a complete collection at one point. It was such a thrill to see that old tooling back at retail, I'm talking figures from 1983, 1984...stuff I had loooong since missed out on.
I still really like the Storm Shadow from the 1997 wave, despite the bad quality of the plastic. It was cool that he didn't have a Cobra symbol, so his allegiance is kind of ambiguous. Then they went and made him a Cobra again in 2001 and he's been one pretty much ever since with maybe one or two equally ambiguous releases. I guess the public at large just always considers him a Cobra despite the fact that he was a Joe for the majority of ARAH's lifespan. I also still REALLY like the 2001 "Woodlands Camo" Firefly cause that's a great re-deco, and with the new plastic for the thumbs it's much more durable than the original. |

It was an interesting time for Generation X. Most "mainstreamers", and definitely the Boomers, were still in that "you're too old for toys" mindset, but Star Wars was back in theaters and on shelves, we were addicted to Street Fighter and Tekken, the X-Men and Spider-Man and Batman were huge, and Toyfare magazine (and movies like Clerks and Mallrats) made it OK to acknowledge that you could be a functioning adult and own nerdy shit. |

I had all of the 2000 and 2001 figures that were released at retail. I ended up auctioning them off on eBay some years later. I have mixed feelings about that. I felt with the way they were weathered that Hasbro was trying to compete with 21st Century Toys' more realistic looking toys at the time. Regardless, I think they're a nice line.

I would have bought more had I known some of them would be worth more than the vintage run!
